Aston Villa boss is eventually dismissed after the woeful start of the season.
The two teams of Aston Villa, men and women, both have had a disappointing start. Both teams led by Spanish boss, Unai Emery and Natalia Arroyo respectively, had winless results in the first four games in the league.
Emery’s men had one draw against Hull City and three defeats versus Brighton, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest before eventually picking up their first win before the international break.
Meanwhile, Arroyo’s side had slightly better results, two draws and two defeats. Unfortunately, Arroyo did not have the same fortune as Emery. She has been dismissed while his counterpart in the men’s team has been given a chance long enough to bounce back.
According to the report in BBC, Arroyo is immediately replaced by a more experienced figure in the women’s team.
“Former Everton manager Brian Sorensen, who is now Villa’s women’s technical advisor, has been placed in interim charge.”
The Spanish boss was actually signed with a three and a half year contract. At the beginning, she was able to salvage Villa from relegation last season by finishing 9th in the final standings.
Unfortunately, despite the potentials displayed in her team, the Lionesses failed to perform well consistently. They displayed a promising start while holding Chelsea in a draw. Yet, they were hapless as Tottenham ran rampant in a 4-0 victory in their last outing. Her team had concerning defensive frailties and lost possession too easily.
Her team’s unconvincing form was surely disappointing as the club has made a heavy investment to rebuild the team. They signed eight new players this season alone. However, Arroyo did not seem to be able to lead her side to produce better performance.
He is one of the top names in Danish women football. Sorensen had successful spells with Fortuna Hjorring with two league titles in 2014 and 2016 plus Danish Women Cup in 2016. He also led two other teams to win the same competition. The husband of Danish woman footballer, Camilla Kur Larsen, did it with IK Skovbakken in 2009 and then with FC Nordsjaelland women in 2020.
Sorensen also guided Fortuna Hjorring to reach quarterfinals in 2016/17 Women’s Champions League. Their campaign ended following their defeat from Manchester City women.
The Danish boss was previously in charge of Everton Women too from 2022 to 2026. Yet, he only led them to finish on the mid table, sixth, and eight place twice before leaving in the midst of the 2025/26 season. Prior to being appointed as the caretaker of Aston Villa women, the 46-year old manager has been the technical advisor in the West Midlands side. He was named by the management in March 2026.
