Two years after Team USA defeated Team Europe in Virginia to reclaim the Solheim Cup, the biennial team event returns this week at Bernardus Golf course in the Netherlands. Leading the Americans when play starts Friday will be world No. 1 Nelly Korda, while the Europeans will be fronted by Lottie Woad and Charley Hull.
Speaking of Korda, Woad and Hull …
Starting things on Friday morning at Bernardus will be the foursomes match of Korda and partner Allisen Corpuz squaring off against the duo of Woad and Hull. You want a reason to get up early (or stay up late)? Here’s your excuse. The first match of this year’s Solheim Cup should be a banger.
The storylines in the matchup are juicy. Four times over the past two Solheims, Korda and Corpuz have teamed in foursomes — and four times they’ve won.
“I think my favorite joke to make, which isn’t really a joke, is that it’s really easy to play when you’re playing off the world No. 1’s ball,” Corpuz said. “There’s just a lot of shots that she hits and I’m just … continually impressed by her game. …
“But like everything that she does is just so elite. I think just, personality-wise, like she’s also really easy to be around. I’m pretty calm and she is as well, so I think there’s a good energy match there.”
Then there’s this: Two years in Sunday singles, Hull steamrolled Korda, 6 and 4.
“Yeah, playing Nelly Korda at that time was really good,” Hull said. “It was so much fun. I came out and played pretty well. Every dog has its day, and I also did that day. But she’s had a pretty incredible season so far this year, and if it came down to singles, it would be a really good match. I have a lot of respect for Nelly. She’s a great world No. 1, and she’s a great golfer and anything can happen in match play.”
Among the other storylines, the playing form of American Angel Yin will be something to track. She returned to play two weeks ago after missing two months of action due to a stomach sickness. On Wednesday, though, Yin said she’ll be ready.
“I’ve been working hard,” Yin said, “I’ve been trying everything I can, because this is the biggest event in women’s golf and to be able to do it in this scale — we know this is going to be a big deal because this is the 20th Solheim Cup. …
“It holds a huge place in my heart. Obviously, I wanted to be honest because I would never jeopardize America. So I had honest talks with myself in the mirror and with my team, and obviously with Angela [captain Angela Stanford] because she’s the only other person, other than my family, that I’ve updated throughout all of this.
“So, I think that we are pretty — we have a clear idea of what it is, and so, yeah, we all agreed on this. And she wanted me here. Because we asked her — well, I didn’t ask her. I had my caddie ask her: Do you want me here? And if she said no, I wouldn’t be here. But she said yes.
“So I think with belief like that and confidence from her to back me, why wouldn’t I show up?”
