Only a few Aston Villa men have managed to make the most appearances at the FIFA World Cup finals up to this date.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already heading into Matchday Two, with today’s games involving teams from Groups A and B once again. Almost all Aston Villa men featured in the opening games. Only two out of eight names did not play in the opener, Ivory Coast’s Evan Guessand and Ollie Watkins.
The first games also marked crucial milestones in the club’s record of World Cup appearances. Emiliano Martinez has just earned his 60th cap for Argentina while featuring in the match versus Algeria. It was also his eighth appearance at the World Cup, with his previous seven coming in Qatar 2022.
As long as he remains a Villa man and does not switch sides until the tournament is over, Martinez has an opportunity to hold the club’s all-time World Cup appearance record. The Argentine is just two games away from overtaking the current Aston Villa record holder for the most World Cup appearances. Here are the two names who have featured in the most games on football’s biggest stage as Villans.
One of the Villans with the most World Cup appearances is former Sweden captain Olof Mellberg. He was part of Blågult’s squads for the 2002 and 2006 World Cup finals and played in all eight games for his nation across both editions. Sweden reached the Round of 16 in each tournament.
He made his debut as a starter in the opener versus England at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Mellberg was in the same team as Henrik Larsson and young Zlatan Ibrahimovic. They faced England’s much-anticipated golden generation featuring David Beckham, Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, and Ashley Cole. Both sides shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Sweden then defeated Nigeria 2-1 on Matchday Two and held Argentina to another 1-1 draw, which was enough to send Albiceleste home since they needed a win in their final game. Unfortunately, Sweden were unable to get past Senegal in the Round of 16, losing 2-1 on the golden goal rule.
In Germany 2006, Mellberg was named captain. He led Sweden to advance from the group stage after stalemates against Trinidad and Tobago and England, plus a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay. Sadly, the former Villarreal and Juventus man was unable to help his team avoid a 2-0 defeat to the hosts in the Round of 16. Overall, he earned 117 caps for Sweden, registering eight goals and three assists.
The Villan who currently holds the club’s all-time World Cup appearance record is former Republic of Ireland international Paul McGrath. He featured in nine games across two World Cup editions, Italy 1990 and USA 1994.
McGrath was an integral part of Jack Charlton’s Republic of Ireland side and made his World Cup debut against England in Cagliari in the Group F opener. He was deployed as a defensive midfielder at that time instead of as a centre-back and even had two chances to score from long range. Sadly, both efforts were off target.
In Italy 1990, he helped The Boys in Green progress to the quarter-finals unbeaten, although they failed to win any match within normal or extra time. They eventually lost 1-0 to the hosts.
Four years later, McGrath contributed significantly as Ireland got their revenge. In the opener, he frustrated Arrigo Sacchi’s men by keeping them at bay. His Villa teammate, Ray Houghton, scored the winning goal.
Unfortunately, they were defeated by Mexico in the second game and only shared the spoils in a goalless draw versus Norway. Ireland’s campaign ended in the Round of 16 following a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands. Overall, the former Manchester United man made 83 appearances at international level, scoring eight goals and providing two assists.
