Tottenham Hotspur winger Mohammed Kudus has been omitted from Ghana’s World Cup squad after failing to recover from a hamstring injury in time.
The 25-year-old has been a key figure for club and country but has not featured since January due to the persistent injury issue.
Kudus suffered a setback while approaching full fitness in the spring, deepening concerns over his ability to return before the tournament.
Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi delivered a blunt assessment of the situation back in April, effectively writing off the winger’s season.
“Kudus, for this season, has gone,” the Italian said. “I am sorry for him, first of all, because he is a good guy. Should be very important for us, but we lose time if we speak about the past.”
Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has named a 28-man squad, which will be reduced to 26 ahead of the group stage opening fixtures.
Kudus has scored 13 goals in 46 appearances for Ghana and netted twice for the Black Stars at the previous World Cup.
He also contributed two goals and two assists during qualifying for this edition before injury ended his involvement for club and country.
Ernest Nuamah earns a place in the squad despite spending a year on the sidelines himself, having returned to action for Lyon in May following a cruciate ligament tear.
Premier League and EFL players feature prominently in the Ghanaian contingent, with Antoine Semenyo, who scored 17 goals for Bournemouth and Manchester City this season, included alongside Coventry’s Brandon Thomas-Asante.
Leicester’s Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu also make the squad despite the Foxes’ relegation to League One.
Queiroz only took charge of Ghana in April following the sacking of Otto Addo, who had guided the side to World Cup qualification before being dismissed after back-to-back defeats in March.
Ghana open their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto before facing England on June 23 in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and rounding off the group stage against Croatia in Philadelphia.
England have already confirmed their full 26-man squad, with Kudus’ Tottenham team-mate Djed Spence securing a spot, while colleagues Dominic Solanke and Conor Gallagher were left out despite both having received call-ups from Thomas Tuchel in the past 12 months.
