Aston Villa are set to return to their old ownership deal with the Portuguese side, Vitoria Guimares this week.
Aston Villa through one of their owners, Nassef Sawiris, have made decision on the return of their ownership model to Vitoria Guimares, the Portuguese outfit in the top flight. Such has been reached following the key meeting in Portugal recently after the reduction of the ownership percentage from V-Sports, the company group under Sawiris and Wes Edens, another Villa owner, as reported in Birmingham mail.
“Portuguese top flight club Vitoria Guimaraes has confirmed its members have voted in favour of a proposal to transfer a 17 percent stake in the club back to V Sports to restore their total stake to 46 percent.”
Back in June 2023, V-Sport had to release their majority ownership, which was almost 50 percent of the share at that time to comply with UEFA regulations. Their share was reduced to 29 percent. In addition, they did not include any representative in the Vitoria board of directors.
It had to be done due to the fact that both Aston Villa and Vitoria Guimares qualified to UEFA Conference League 2023/24 season. Villa secured the spot via the position in the league table while Vitoria did it through qualifiers. UEFA regulation prohibited the multiple ownership for the clubs which compete in the same competition.
V-Sports remains serious in restoring the ownership as it used to be, in order to continue their collaboration. During the general meeting this week, which was also attended by Roberto Olabe, The Lions’ president of football operations, such proposal has been agreed thorough a voting.
“The members of Vitória Sport Clube, meeting in an Extraordinary General Assembly at the Pavilhão Unidade Vimaranense, approved the two items on the Agenda.
“Point 1, which led to a vote on the proposal to transfer to V Sports shares held by Vitória Sport Clube, representing 17% of the share capital of Vitória Sport Clube – Futebol, SAD, with a view to restoring the 46% stake approved at the General Meeting in March 2023, received 717 votes in favor, 468 votes against, six blank votes and four invalid votes, totaling 1,195 votes cast.”
However, when it comes to the takeover impact, especially on its sporting side, the result has not yet to be seen. Since the presence of V-Sports as one of the stake holders, Vitoria’s position in Portuguese top flight has been degrading. In the 2023/24, they finished fifth, then sixth in 2025, but then going down to ninth last season.
This season, they are still struggling and sitting at the bottom half of the table with only nine points, from two wins and three draws in 10 games. The players they get from Aston Villa have not been convincing too. The loanee, Oliwier Zych, lost his place between the sticks in the last two games, while the youngster they signed, Yeimar Mosquera, is not the first choice although he did just opened his goal account two weeks ago.
It remains to be seen how much impact V-Sports can have on Vitoria to improve their form, campaign or even better win a silverware in the future.
