LIV Golf may be out of options.
BC Partners — which had emerged as the potential financial backers for the league’s planned 2027 relaunch — has dropped its $300 million bid, per reports from the Financial Times and the Athletic.
In recent months, BC Partners had been evaluating whether it had enough players and enough star power to push through with a new league. Per those reports, LIV 2.0 had attracted interest from a critical mass of players — 30 or more for the 2027 season — but lacked the star power necessary to make the league viable. Facing complex negotiations with a group of high-profile players plus a ticking clock, BC Partners is now out.
There is a hearing scheduled for Thursday in New Jersey bankruptcy court; the Athletic reports that is where the league could begin its liquidation process.
LIV’s financial woes began back in April, when its founders and funders at the Saudi Public Investment Fund suddenly withdrew support. That led to a rocky rest of its 2026 schedule, which ultimately featured two canceled tournaments and bootstrapped operations at some others, leaving the league in a financial hole by the end of the season. LIV filed for bankruptcy and laid off a majority of its employees; its unpaid creditors soon queued up alongside the rest of the sports world, hoping to learn what was next.
League leadership laid out a vision for LIV’s future centered around player equity and a stripped-down schedule. But several significant figures withdrew their interest, from its top player in Jon Rahm to Rahm’s teammate Tyrrell Hatton to major champs and Ryder Cuppers like Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter to in-form pros like David Puig and Lucas Herbert.
While Bryson DeChambeau expressed his interest in the league’s potential future in a podcast last week, he stopped short of stating his commitment to LIV’s future.
LIV Golf could not immediately be reached for comment by GOLF. More information about the league’s future — and details on the potential wind-down process — is expected to come at Thursday’s hearing.
