The ex-Aston Villa star recalled how his team was ‘super talented’ during his stint in the Midlands

The former Aston Villa star recalled his days at Villa Park, surrounded by his super-talented teammates at the time.

Aston Villa in the new millennium were seen as one of their finest teams after Brian Little’s tenure and before the arrival of Unai Emery. They managed to reach the FA Cup final, only to suffer a narrow loss to Chelsea, finished sixth and eighth twice between 2000 and 2003, and qualified for continental competitions.

During that time, one Dutchman was part of the squad. George Boateng was one of the key men in John Gregory’s side. He stayed in the West Midlands from 1999 to 2002 and enjoyed his spell there.

During an interview with Tribalfootball in 2024, he recalled how fortunate he was to be part of a team with super-talented teammates at Aston Villa, such as David James, Darius Vassell, Alan Wright, Paul Merson and Gareth Barry, plus David Ginola.

“When you play you don’t realize how vibrant your squad is and when I look back now and see with what players I was lucky to play I understand how strong that squad was. We were all strong characters there, super talented, and our minds were so creative in finding ways to win games and how to manage ourselves and the group to become a successful team.”

Boateng and his pride with Aston Villa

The former defensive midfielder made 134 appearances, netting five goals and providing one assist. During his spell in the West Midlands, he witnessed how his talented teammates could make the difference and deliver the necessary results.

John Gregory’s men managed to beat Leeds United in both fixtures during the 1999/2000 campaign, as well as securing a 2-1 home win against them in the following season. Boateng himself provided one assist. They were among the most impressive teams outside the big four. Villa also managed to beat Liverpool and Chelsea away from home, securing a convincing 3-1 victory. Their domestic cup campaigns in the 1999/2000 season were impressive too, as they reached the FA Cup final and the EFL Cup semi-final.

The ex-Ghana national team coach shared his thoughts on his proudest moments with the Lions, despite their failure in the final.

“If we had won that final it would have been a coronation of the hard work and all the sacrifices and the strong team that we were. It was such a pity that we lost that final because I think that team deserved to win a silverware. But despite this, I look back at my time at Aston Villa with great pride and I have only good memories of my time there.”

Boateng on Gareth Southgate

One of the teammates he looked up to was former England boss Gareth Southgate. The Dutchman, who earned only four international caps, considered him one of the most distinguished figures in his career, both on and off the pitch.

“Gareth was one of the most respected players in the dressing room and I was lucky enough to play with him at Aston Villa but also at Middlesbrough. Gareth has always had leadership qualities and the way he behaved on and outside the pitch was always a great example for us other players. I realized that Gareth was the type of person and player that if you had any problem on the team you could go and speak with him and he would do anything in order to help you.

“He would listen to you and see how he could help you. Also on the pitch I had a really good relationship with him and I loved my time playing and working with him. And yes I thought that he would become a great manager because he had all the qualities in order to achieve it, had leadership skills, man managing skills, a great understanding of the game, and also was a great human being.”

It is no surprise that Boateng believed the former defender could enjoy considerable success in his managerial career, despite being regarded as underrated. Southgate remains the only England manager to have led the national team to more than one final in major international competitions.
