Michael Brennan pulls back curtain on Titleist's secret prototype 3-wood

After picking up his third career win — and second in the last five starts — Michael Brennan is sharing some details on one of Titleist’s hottest prototype clubs.

Brennan took home the Baycurrent Classic Sunday in Japan behind an outstanding display off the tee where he led the field in accuracy — missing just five fairways all week, including none on Sunday — while ranking eighth in driving distance. As you can imagine, Brennan naturally led in the field in SG: Off-the-Tee, picking up over seven shots, his best performance of the season.

Because Brennan is one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour and Yokohama Country Club measures a modest (for the PGA Tour) 7,322 yards on the scorecard, Brennan certainly didn’t have to pull the big stick on every hole.

Instead, he often relied on his Titleist GTS 3W Prototype fairway wood off the tee. Brennan was the first player spotted testing the club in March, but we still haven’t learned much more about it.

Brennan first tested the GTS 3W Proto (Titleist’s internal designation for the club) at the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March, during the GTS driver Tour launch. Since then, Titleist has launched both the GTS2 and GTS3 fairway woods both on Tour and later at retail, but there hasn’t been a peep about the GTS 3W.

Even as other Titleist pros like Justin Thomas, Cameron Young and Robert MacIntyre tested it or put it in play, no details have emerged — even when Brennan and Jackson Koivun found the winner’s circle with it.

But on Sunday, Brennan shared some details about his testing and ultimate decision to game the club after his latest win in Japan.

“I’ve kind of bounced around to a couple different 3-woods this year, and I started playing this 3-wood I think at Colonial this year, which was in Ft. Worth. I’m pretty sure that was the week that I switched over to the 3-wood that I’m still playing,” Brennan said Sunday. “Oh, yeah, it’s been great. I feel like the spin consistency is better with that 3-wood for me. So when I toe the golf ball, it doesn’t go too, too far. When I heel it, it doesn’t spin too much and it stays relatively consistent.”

Like its presumed siblings, the GTS2 and GTS3, the GTS 3W Prototype features a silver face, which was an addition Titleist made this year to make the faces appear like they have more loft. Many players respond to brighter fairway wood and driver faces by covering the ball better and getting more consistent contact and launch.

In a departure from the existing models, the GTS 3W Prototype has just one sole weight located in the center of the bottom of the club. The GTS2 and GTS3 both have flippable heel and toe sole weights to move CG bias either right or left.

The only characteristic we can gather from photos of the GTS 3W is that it looks like it has a larger and flatter overall profile, with a face height similar to the GTS2. Given that Brennan previously played the GT1 3Tour fairway wood, as did Young, who has also gamed the GTS 3W at times, it’s reasonable to assume the prototype fills a similar role.

But Brennan added one more comment that may indicate this is something else.

“I feel like there’s a little bit of a right bias miss for me, which I think is good,” he said. “I typically play a cut with the longer clubs, so knowing that it’s not going to go left super often gives me freedom to swing hard.”

Titleist typically keeps most of their clubs with a pretty neutral flight bias in stock settings. If the GTS 3W truly has a right bias to it, that would be something fairly new entirely.

It’s entirely possible we won’t see what the GTS 3W ends up being at retail until Titleist’s next product cycle. Titleist took a similar approach during the third-generation (2023) T-Series irons in releasing a Tour-only T350 3-iron utility iron prototype. That prototype eventually inspired the shape for the fourth-generation U505 utilities in the 3- and 4-iron lofts, but Titleist still launched an updated T350 3-iron proto that we don’t have much info on.

But, with Titleist due to refresh their “1” product in the coming months following the initial GTS rollout, gearheads can hope for some news on what the GTS 3W will become next.
