How long will Aston Villa keep Alejandro Garnacho?

Aston Villa through the boss appears to still keep their faith in Alejandro Garnacho, despite the criticism on signing him.

Aston Villa stumbled again at home yesterday as they had to share spoils with Brentford in a 2-2 draw. Alejandro Garnacho, who posted his being ‘ready’ in his social media account after his fine form in two friendly matches during the international break, was once again only an unused substitute.

The fans begin to wonder if Villa really made the same loan mistake, just like what they did with Harvey Elliott last season. However, Unai Emery still believes in the Argentine. He even said in one of the interviews that the winger is improving and played 90 minutes in both friendly matches, plus scoring one goal each.

Yet, what the fans see so far is still the opposite. The Athletic reported that Emery had his own reasons to keep him in the squad.

“The manager is willing to be more patient with Garnacho, considering he was not signed as a guaranteed starter.”

What actually Emery sees in Garnacho?

Aston Villa boss might have seen him as his personal project, a challenge to conquer. In his managerial career, Emery is known for his attempt to revive the high-profile players who are at the crossroads of his career. He has started it since his days in his home soil, particularly in Sevilla and Villarreal.

The Spanish boss has done it since he arrived in Villa Park too, although those players he helped to rehabilitate did not always succeed afterwards. Garnacho is bound to be his next one, alongside Leon Goretzka, perhaps.

Emery’s way in orchestrating his move, from making an approach to his agent Jorge Mendes to broker the deal, convincing the winger himself not to leave England, despite his initial plan, to working on his deal with no recall clause and discreet details in it, does indicate Emery’s own plan.

Garnacho appears to be seen as a long term project Emery is willing to work on, provided the Argentine is also collaborative with his boss’s method. It remains to be seen how much patience Villa have to let Emery keep the player whose deal could cost £42.5million in total.

Garnacho’s complicated issues

In his peak years, like during his early years in Manchester United, the 22-year-old displayed the quality Emery wants in a winger with excellent acceleration, pace and creativity to penetrate the final third. Garnacho played 144 times for The Red Devils, netting 26 times with 22 assists. The number itself is promising.

Yet, he has some complicated issues Emery should already be aware of. He has low physical fitness to play at the top level, lack of confidence, off the pitch issues, especially regarding his family with his ex-girlfriend, the mother of his son, left him to move abroad and so on.

On the pitch, Garnacho has been below par, often misfires, struggling with consistency. He has a tendency of being moody, easily annoyed when not getting his chance to play and so on. Despite the claim from the source that he is progressing, there has been no convincing evidence that he would bounce back his career with Villa. Perhaps Emery could inspire Garnacho’s dramatic rise. Only time will eventually tell if the Argentine winger is worth keeping.
