Jackson Koivun, by all accounts, will play pro golf for a long time, earn all kinds of money and win a whole bunch of tournaments.
But Friday, during the second round of the Bank of Utah Championship, the 21-year-old prodigy was just struggling. He was coming off the highs of last weekend’s Presidents Cup. He admitted he was exhausted. He needed a run to make the cut.
Then he showed why he might play pro golf for a long time, earn all kinds of money and win a whole bunch of tournaments.
“Standing on 9 tee with 10 holes to go,” Koivun said, “I just told myself if I can make four or five birdies, I’ll be fine.”
He made five, and he needed them all. His last, on his last hole of the day, the par-5 18th, was special, though his lie for his second shot was not; it nestled against rake lines inside the left fairway bunker. Would he play it safe? Would he go for the green? The latter. “I was like, I’m going to go for broke here,” he said. He did, hitting just over the green, and from there, he dropped a 5-footer to move on to the weekend.
“I’m the type of person that, if I come out to a tournament, I come in here and I want to win it,” Koivun said. “So at the end of the day I was fighting hard to make that cut and just happy to say I did and have a chance this weekend to hopefully go put up two good numbers.”
