While most golfers understand the value of a custom club-fitting, in which your strengths can be maximized and swing shortcomings minimized thanks to the right clubhead and shaft combination — a smaller percentage of players also apply this useful logic to their wedges. Specifically, the wedge bounce that would be ideal for your personal style of play.
What is wedge bounce? Bounce refers to the angle formed by the leading edge of the wedge, the ground and the sole of the wedge when the shaft is positioned vertically on a flat surface.
For example, take a look at the main photo above. As you can see, the wedge on the left has a leading edge that sits much closer to the ground than the wedge on the right. Even though the wedges share the same loft, the wedge on the left has a lower bounce than the one on the right.
So what does that mean? And how can you decide which bounce would be best for your game? You could visit your local True Spec for a full wedge fitting to find out. As someone who has been through several custom full-bag fittings, I can also count myself among those who have never had a wedge-specific fitting, so I tried the quiz myself.
I chose a 54-degree wedge — a basic sand-wedge loft — as my foundation for the quiz. My course conditions? Average. Shot selection? Full swings, standard chips and open-face shots. My impact path? Shallow.
