Aston Villa boss, Unai Emery, might consider making a tweak in his team with their new signing as the key man.
Aston Villa are forced to go through rebuilding phase again after losing a number of spine players in the past few years. The like of Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Youri Tielemans shaped their system, which does not only work well but succeed in delivering a trophy to end their 30-year title drought.
The team’s tactical foundation so far by utilizing Rogers, Watkins and Tielemans is likely to change too. The new signings would certainly bring new color in the team’s structure. One of their new signings who could be the key figure in this tweak is Johan Manzambi, beside Zion Suzuki.
According to the report in Birmingham mail, Emery is prepared to give freer role to the Switzerland international in the system despite still only playing once as a starter, against Spurs in the last outing.
“Manzambi played a good match, but he does not understand everything that we want in terms of positioning.”
“His qualities go beyond the tactical idea that I want to achieve with him because he is a fantastic player. Sometimes he must feel free to play and exploit his qualities, but always within our structure.”
The former Frieburg man is a versatile midfielder who can practically make transition in the second line smoothly from playing deep to number ten role. He could be playing wide too easily as he join the attacking build-up. His excellence in pressing, reading the game, plus acceleration and creativity to create chance enable him to do so.
The 20-year-old midfielder has shown what he was capable of in the Spurs clash. He contributed one goal and one assist. Manzambi created two key passes and 18 passes in the game, plus one long ball, one through ball in that game. He also produced four shots, two of which were on target, plus one dribble.
Meanwhile, defensively, he also contributed well. Manzambi made one tackle, one clearance and blocked shots once. His style of play is considered almost similar to Arsenal man Eberechi Eze but with better defensive traits.
During his managerial career, Emery is known for his emphasis on team structure in the game. Yet, he has been lenient or even open-minded for freer role, as long as it is still under the expected structure.
In Sevilla and Valencia, Argentine midfielder, Ever Banega was one example. His skill sets are almost the same as Manzambi but he had better physical prowess which gave him the advantage in a duels or pressing. Some other examples are Juan Mata in Valencia, Alex Iwobi in Arsenal and Emiliano Martinez plus Morgan Rangers himself in The Clarets and Blue.
Only time will tell if Manzambi’s freer role can lead The Lions to success instantly or not, although the Spurs game could give a hint of his capability. Should he develop more in his game, either defensively or offensively, it would only be even more beneficial for his teams.
