Aston Villa skipper shared his view on his team’s first victory in the Premier League yesterday.
Aston Villa finally secured their first win in the Premier League yesterday. Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emi Buendia scored their winning goals as they crashed Tottenham 3-2 on the road. Their three-goal lead was unfortunately reduced as Spurs netted twice in the last ten minutes.
Villa captain, John McGinn was pleased and relieved after this away win again, just like the previous two in the Champions League and Carabao Cup. The Scotsman shared his view on their win in Tottenham stadium as reported by the official club website, avfc.co.uk
“To be honest, it was really frustrating in the first half because, normally, we’re a lot more organised than what we were – throw-ins, set-pieces, we were a little bit ragged.”
The turning point most fans saw was probably Johan Manzambi’s goal. Yet, it was actually Zion Suzuki‘s top form. He made four crucial saves in the first half and launched a swift attack with his long ball leading to the second goal of the game.
The skipper did point out that the Senegalese forward’s goal changed the game tone. It helped gain his confidence back.
“I think with Nicolas Jackson’s goal, he’ll be delighted because we’ve worked on that quite a lot before it.
“But he’s been great, he’s been really calm. He’s just determined to get us back to where we were with a new group of players.”
In this game, the combination of Jackson, Manzambi, Suzuki and the other senior players like Buendia and Kamara plus McGinn himself starts to bring positive results. The starting XI in Spurs’ match can be one of the examples of Villa’s winning team.
As the rebuilding phase is going on the right way, it does not mean that the progress stops. The team needs to continue working on it to create better chemistry between the players and eventually team later. Plus there are some new signings who have yet to make their debut since joining the team or playing together long enough with the other new signings like Leon Goretzka or even the youngster Brian Madjo. Both are still injured and expected to hit the pitch after the international break.
McGinn has his own opinion on this issue. The Scotsman believes he and the other senior players have to play their part to help the process. I is part of their extended role in the team.
“You can easily say that now after three points, but you start to think ‘are the new players believing in what’s made us successful over the past few years?’.
“So that’s where myself, Tyrone, Cashy, Emi, we become important because this is our way. This is how we compete with the big boys. And the new guys are buying into it.
“It’s taking them time, but it took Youri time, it took Lucas Digne time. It’s not easy, but it’s rewarding. And if we need to play a certain way to get points, I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
