Aston Villa boss stated that Zion Suzuki is what his team needed as they sealed the first win in the Premier League.
Aston Villa finally snatched their first win in the Premier League this season after thumping Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham 3-2 on the road. Johan Manzambi opened the scoring of the first half and provided an assist in the second half for Nicolas Jackson before Emi Buendia’s long range shot from outside the box put them in a three-goal advantage. Unfortunately, they were conceded in the final ten minutes from Conor Gallagher and Jean Paul Van Hecke.
However, despite their late concession and no clean sheet, Villa’s goalkeeper still earned praise from Unai Emery. His fine form is one of the key men in this positive result. The Spanish manager mentioned his importance during the post match interview as reported in BBC.
“We needed the keeper. He is a keeper to save us. To make sure in the goal he has the quality and then he has the skills to play and build up. It is very important how he is doing it and sometimes taking some risks, but through those he is improving and learning.”
The Japanese international did make a fine contribution to his team’s first victory in the Premier League this season. His saving rate might have yet reached Emiliano Martinez’s but he will be getting there.
Yet, his excellence with the ball on his feet and ability in the build-up is the one which steals the spotlight. Emery added how he contributed well in the game in his comment.
“In the build up, he can choose to play long balls because he has a very long pass in behind and he did that for the second goal we scored.”
That is exactly what Suzuki is great at, something which Martinez rarely does. The former Parma man is heavily involved in the build up, mainly using long balls, beside just short passes.
Against Spurs today, he made 55 touches, 38 passes, 26 long balls with nine of them being accurate. That added up his superb performance defensively with three clearance, five saves, four high claims and two punches.
Suzuki clearly has all the potential to be the best in the world. Not this year yet but in the near future. He could be equal to Mike Maignan, Alisson Brecker, Thibault Cortois or Unai Simon sooner as he keeps on improving alongside with the experience at the top level.
The 24-year-old shot stopper could be the next best goalkeeper in the world, should he stay consistent in his form. He might be in contention with Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen, Barcelona’s Joan Garcia, Porto’s Diogo Costa, and probably Leeds’ James Trafford and River Plate’s Santiago Beltran who could be the next generation of world’s best in the next few years.
As long as The Lions stay competing at the top level and win trophies, Suzuki is likely to stay in Villa Park. Otherwise, he could be moving to one of the elite sides in Europe to reach his stardom.
