Aston Villa are set to take on Tottenham, their winless fellow in the Premier League, on Saturday.
Aston Villa and Tottenham are some of the winless teams in English topflight this season. They are squaring off this weekend for their first ever win in the league. Unai Emery’s men are in a better situation than their counterparts. They have snatched the second win of the season, albiet not in the league. A 3-1 victory over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup in the midweek should give them more confidence ahead of this game. They also had another win in the Champions League previously.
John McGinn and Co must take advantage of their confidence and positive result in the previous fixture to continue the positive trend as well as end their negative run in the league. Their opposition side have been in woeful form with scoreless runs in the Premier League games. They were already eliminated in the Carabao Cup this midweek too. So Roberto De Zerbi’s side are not in their ideal circumstances heading to this clash.
Their head-to-head record is also better. Villa have secured four wins in the last six meetings. Unfortunately, they were beaten 2-1 in their last encounter at the end of Premier League last season at their own home turf, which practically salvaged De Zerbi’s side from relegation.
Villa still have a number of players unavailable for this encounter. Amadou Onana, Leon Goretzka, Pau Torres, Marco Bizot and Ian Maatsen would not be available due to their injury. Joao Gomes has had a slight discomfort, which might put him on the sideline.
Thus, Emery would return to the team’s best players available for the starting XI. Suzuki would return between the sticks. At the backline, Tyrone Mings and Victor Lindelof would get a nod in the lineup with Matteo Ruggeri and Matty Cash, who had been benched in the past two games due to physical fitness issue, would be back in the frame.
In the midfield, Boubacar Kamara, would be accompanied by Ross Barkley or Lamare Bogarde as the double pivot. John McGinn would be back on the right wing and George Hemmings on the left flank. Emi Buendia would be a second striker behind Nicolas Jackson who would return to lead the line.
If things do not go well in the second half, Emery could sub on Ibrahim Mbaye, Alysson and Tammy Abraham again to break the deadlock. Alejandro Garnacho could be coming off the bench too, should he manage to convince Emery that he could make the difference instantly.
