Aston Villa news as Unai Emery set to bring many changes v Coventry City in Carabao Cup

Aston Villa are set to make changes in the starting line up against Coventry City in the Carabao Cup this midweek.

Aston Villa are heading to another vital game in the midweek to end their negative trend this season. The clash in the Carabao Cup versus Coventry City would be a perfect opportunity for Unai Emery’s men to pick up the second win of 2026/27 season.

Frank Lampard’s side has been scoreless and winless in the last four matches in the Premier League. Their only victory this season was in the second round when they thumped Plymouth 4-2.

What changes?

To secure another victory, Villa are likely to rest a number of key men in the previous outings. The likes of Zion Suzuki, Victor Lindelof, Boubacar Kamara, Emiliano Buendia, Nicolas Jackson and George Hemmings could be benched.

Meanwhile, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Ibrahim Mbaye, Johan Manzambi, Lamar Bogarde and Alysson Edward could get a nod as a starter. The injury of Pau Torres, Ian Maatsen, Amadou Onana, Leon Goretzka, Brian Madjo and Matty Cash would help them to get more minutes and practically push Emery to accelerate their introduction to the team.

The clash in the Carabao Cup is a less burden too for Emery to make necessary experiments before another game in the Premier League this weekend. The Spaniard could consider giving more minutes to Alejandro Garnacho and Matteo Ruggeri too in order to make the team gel better ahead of the weekend match. They both have only featured 31 minutes and 23 minutes respectively so far.

Between the sticks, Marco Bizot would be selected to start instead of James Wright as it would be too risky, while Suzuki needs a rest after being a starter in the last four games.

Meanwhile, in the defence line, Harwood-Bellis and Tyrone Mings could be named in the lineup as the centre back, whereas in both flanks, Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan Bissaka can play from the start.

In the midfield, Joao Gomes is back in the frame with Lamare Bogarde as the defensive midfielder with John McGinn playing as number 10 to lead the team. On both wings, Ibrahim Mbaye and Alysson might be picked up ahead of Garnacho and Manzambi. They could be subbed on in the second half instead to support Tammy Abraham who leads the line.
