Brighton and Hove Albion have completed the loan signing of Canadian striker Promise David from Belgian Pro League club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.
The deal includes an obligation to buy for a reported £22 million if certain performance criteria are met during his time at the club.
David’s path to the Premier League is one of the more extraordinary stories in modern football, taking him through multiple countries and several obscure leagues.
Born Promise Oluwatobi Emmanuel David Akinpelu, the Canadian forward began his youth career with the Toronto FC Academy before joining local club Vaughan Azzurri in 2016.
His journey then took him to Croatia, where he joined the youth academy of Trnje in 2019, before signing an academy contract with American club FC Tulsa in September 2021.
The real turning point came in January 2022, when David joined Maltese club Valletta on a short-term contract, an unlikely destination for a player who would go on to reach the Premier League.
He made an immediate impact in Malta, scoring the goal that sent Valletta to the 2021-22 Maltese FA Trophy final, where they ultimately finished as runners-up.
David transferred to fellow Maltese side Sirens in June 2022, continuing to develop before moving on to Estonian club Nomme Kalju in February 2023.
It was in Estonia where David truly announced himself as a serious talent, scoring a remarkable 30 goals in 44 appearances for Kalju and drawing attention from clubs across Europe.
Those numbers persuaded Union Saint-Gilloise to sign him in 2024, giving him his first taste of top-level European football in the Belgian Pro League.
He repaid their faith in extraordinary fashion, scoring 24 goals as the Belgian club secured their first league title in 90 years, a stunning achievement for both player and club.
David has also firmly established himself as a key figure for the Canadian national team, earning 14 caps and scoring four international goals across his appearances.
Brighton moved decisively to secure his services, identifying him as a player with the profile and momentum to make an impact in the Premier League this season.
The loan structure with an obligation to buy reflects the club’s genuine long-term interest in a forward whose rise from Maltese football to the top flight has been nothing short of remarkable.
