‘Always difficult’ – Aston Villa star views ahead of the Champions League opener

Aston Villa star shares his view in the press conference ahead of their Champions League opener this midweek.

Aston Villa are set to begin their European campaign in the Champions League by paying a visit to Jay Breydelstadion to take on Club Brugge. It is their fourth meetings already against the Belgian side in three years consecutively.

Ahead of this clash, Aston Villa star, Emiliano Buendia shares his opinion various issues, including the game in the press conference as reported in the official club site, avfc.co.uk.

“Tomorrow we have a great test in European competition. Away is always difficult, like Unai said, so the mentality has to be the same as it has been all these years to be winners.”

Finding momentum in UCL

After their winless and goalless run in the last three outings, Aston Villa are keen on bouncing back immediately and find the right momentum to turn things around after the slow start. The Argentine midfielder added in his comment.

“We will work hard to get the first victory and tomorrow it’s a really good test in Europe, trying to change the momentum, in terms of results and trying to get the rest of our confidence back to perform well and get the results we want.”

Such change of scenery somehow could work for Emery’s side. Last season, Villa did snatch their first win in the Europa League against Bologna. It gradually gave impact to the team and ended their negative runs in the league.

Then, in Emery’s experience himself while going through a rebuilding phase in the 2015/16 campaign with Sevilla, They had winless run too in the first three games in La Liga. Emery led them to clinch their first win in the Champions League group stage opener versus Borussia M’Gladbach. It also helped them to get back on their winning ways.

Interestingly, both in 2016 and last season ended with a Europa League trophy in hands. That is certainly what the fans could hope for this season too.

On his return to UCL

For Buendia himself, this game would be his return to Champions League after the 2024/25 season. Back then, he was only a squad player in Villa due to his lack of physical fitness and injury. He only featured four times with The Lions, mainly as a substitute against Young Boys, Club Brugge and RB Leipzig. He became a starter once when they faced off AS Monaco. The Mar-del-Plata-born attacking midfielder also made two more appearances with Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 but again as a cameo against Bayern Munich in both fixtures.

This time, Buendia is one of the key men after his superb return and bounce back with Villa last season. He shares his target as he added his comments to the press.

“That was the year after the injury. It was a tough year, personally, but I think that when I came back it was very important for me.

“I worked so hard to stay and to help the team and the club to be successful, like we did last season.

“The same for this year. I want to be important, I work every day for it. I want to help the team and, like I said, all the new players since they joined the club to be successful together.I think that’s the most important thing as a player for this club.”
