Aston Villa boss, Unai Emery, has been under questions for his team’s rebuilding and slow start this season.
Aston Villa has gone through a turbulent summer with massive changes in the team. They have sold 14 players, including the key figures in the past few seasons since their return to the Premier League and signed 10 new names instead.
Consequently, Villa have to go through the rebuilding phase in the beginning of the season, which unfortunately starts to concern the fans. Their slow start with winless and goalless results in the last three games brings back their fear of last season’s nightmare, despite their success in the end.
That is probably the reason why Emery remains calm and confident. He shares his optimism and view on staying positive for the next match, as reported by Birmingham world.
“We must try to focus on each match. The next match is the Champions League and something we can feel excited and motivated to play because we deserve to be there. ”
Aston Villa boss knows it all takes time to gel, especially with the 10 new players in the team. Therefore, he chooses to explain it carefully and focus on one game at a time, rather than sharing his long term ambition.
“ Now is no time to think two weeks or three weeks forward. Now it is to compete in Brugge on Tuesday. Then, we are going to think about the next match at home against Nottingham Forest.”
“Each match is a lot of information we can have. We are collecting information individually and collectively about the players, about the structure, about the capacity to build the team.”
The former Villareal, PSG and Sevilla manager has been in the same situation before, including going through the rebuilding phase due to massive departure, and the slow start as well. Yet, he still managed to pull it off and succeed with silverware in hand at the end of the season.
Back in the summer 2015, or his last season with Sevilla, his team experienced the same issue. Emery lost 17 players including the key figures when they won UEFA Cup 2015. The likes of Carlos Bacca, Stephane Mbia,Aleix Vidal, Fernando Navarro and Diogo Figueiras left the club. Sevilla then signed 12 new players to replace them. Iago Aspas, Yevhen Konoplyanka, Adil Rami, Steven Nzonzi and Ciro Immobile were some of the arrivals.
In the beginning of 2015/16, Emery was struggling to gel the team too. They were winless in the first five games in La Liga, with two draws (versus Malaga and Levante) and three (against Atletico Madrid, Celta Vigo and Las Palmas) before picking their first win on matchday six against Rayo Vallecano.
Emery finished that campaign with Sevilla’s third consecutive Europa League after crushing Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in a 3-1 comeback win in the summit. However, his team only finished seventh in the final standings.
