Ethan Nwaneri Completes Season-Long Borussia Dortmund Loan As Arsenal Retain 2030 Contract Option

Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri has completed a season-long loan move to Borussia Dortmund, with the 19-year-old heading to Germany for regular senior football.

The England Under-21 international departs north London as he searches for the consistent match minutes that Arsenal were unable to guarantee him this season.

Dortmund will cover Nwaneri’s salary in full under the terms of the agreement, making the deal financially straightforward for the German club.

The move was accelerated by Borussia Dortmund’s need for reinforcements following the anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered by Giannis Konstantelias.

That blow to Konstantelias left Dortmund short in midfield, prompting the club to move quickly in the closing stages of the transfer window.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had acknowledged back in August that Nwaneri needed match minutes, while also making clear he wanted the player to remain at the club long-term.

Nwaneri remains contracted to Arsenal until 2030, ensuring the Gunners retain full control over his future beyond this temporary spell abroad.

There are no purchase options included in the deal, and it is understood that Arsenal hold a January recall option should they wish to bring him back mid-season.

Lars Ricken, BVB’s Managing Director of Sports, spoke positively about the signing and the circumstances that brought the deal together so late in the window.

Ricken said: “By signing Ethan on loan, we’ve succeeded in bringing in a very talented and technically gifted midfielder.”

He added: “Given Giannis Konstantelias’s extended absence, it was important for us to be able to strengthen our roster at short notice.”

Ricken further confirmed the club’s satisfaction with how negotiations concluded, saying: “For us, signing Ethan was the best possible solution from a sporting perspective.”

“We’re pleased that we were able to finalize this deal just before the transfer window closed,” Ricken concluded, underlining how close the agreement came to falling away entirely.

Nwaneri will now look to establish himself in the Bundesliga, using his time at Dortmund to develop into the senior player Arsenal expect him to become.
