Aston Villa appear to be bracing themselves to release one of their strikers on loan, despite lacking forwards in the squad.
Aston Villa’s striker crisis seems set to continue unless they manage to snatch more names before the deadline day. They have officially lost Ollie Watkins, who has agreed to move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, while at the same time, Unai Emery’s side have managed to secure a fine replacement in Nicolas Jackson.
However, according to the latest report from TalkSport, The Clarets and Blue have made an odd decision that could potentially deepen their crisis.
“Ipswich have agreed a deal with Aston Villa to sign Tammy Abraham on loan. It’s now up to the striker to decide whether he wants to make the move to Ipswich.”
The former AS Roma and AC Milan man is no longer the prolific frontman he used to be. Despite still being 28 years old, Abraham is not reliable enough to press the opposition or penetrate the defensive line with his pace. His finishing also seems to have deteriorated since leaving Italy.
Last season, the striker, who only joined in the winter transfer window of 2025, was given a starting role just twice. Overall, he made only 16 appearances, largely as a substitute, scoring three times and providing one assist.
Based on data from FotMob, his performance stats last season in the Premier League were not convincing, even for an understudy. His top speed was only 33.3 km/hour. He created only nine shots, with just three of them on target. His successful pass rate was only 56.8%, while his winning duel rate was 47.6%.
Abraham also made only 13 defensive contributions, including four tackles and three clearances. The forward with 11 international caps is no longer a striker for elite teams.
Another reason behind Villa’s decision could be their confidence in landing more signings for the attacking unit. They have secured Nicolas Jackson, but he is probably not the last frontman to arrive at Villa Park.
The Lions are still working on a deal for AC Milan man Rafael Leao, who personally prefers a move to the Premier League over the Turkish Super Lig. Villa’s only contender in the race is Galatasaray.
The Villans could also swoop for Jack Grealish. Their former star and skipper could return to the West Midlands on loan. Yet, they would have to compete with Everton, who want him back following his serious injury last season, which ended his campaign too early.
There might also be some other names they have been approaching lately, such as Juventus forward Jonathan David, Bayer Leverkusen man Christian Kofane and even Leicester City youngster Lorenz Hutchison. It will be interesting to see who will actually arrive at Villa Park and be registered in the squad next week.
