Aston Villa seals a move for Champions League winner

Aston Villa have reportedly just sealed a move for an experienced midfielder and Champions League winner this summer.

Aston Villa have just struck another smart move. They have signed an experienced midfielder who won the Champions League in 2020 while constantly competing at the top level. Germany international Leon Goretzka has agreed to join Aston Villa, as reported by the transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, on his official X account.

“Leon Goretzka to Aston Villa, here we go! Verbal agreement in place with the German midfielder after direct call with Unai Emery. Verbal green light to #AVFC project with club planning for medical and signature this upcoming week.”

His possible contract details

The 31-year-old midfielder is the perfect profile for Unai Emery’s revamped squad following the departure of their key men. Goretzka might not be young anymore, but his experience at the top level could be crucial in Villa’s current campaign. He could be Tielemans’ direct replacement and still has a lot to offer the team.

The former Schalke man could be offered a short-term contract, either for two or three years, considering his age. Nevertheless, he might be expecting a fairly high wage since the Clarets and Blue are signing him for free. This could be another strategic transfer for them, just like what they did last season with Victor Lindelof.

Goretzka’s form last season

Goretzka is a versatile midfielder who is capable of operating as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder or attacking midfielder. He could thrive in each position.

Last season, he still managed to contribute five goals and five assists in 47 appearances in all competitions. The Bochum-born midfielder produced one of his finest displays when Bayern crushed FC St Pauli 5-1, scoring once and providing an assist. He also found the back of the net twice in a 3-3 draw against Heidenheim.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he still made the final squad and featured in three games. The midfielder, who has 75 international caps, was also part of Germany’s squads at the previous two World Cups in 2018 and 2022. In total, he has registered 15 goals and 12 assists on the international stage.

Based on data from FotMob, Goretzka’s form was still remarkable, especially in the Bundesliga. His xG last season was 4.8 from 35 shots, 11 of which were on target. His xA was 3.81, while he completed 91.4% of his passes and 68.5% of his long balls. His successful dribble rate was 78.6%, while his duel success rate was 48.8%. His defensive contribution was satisfactory too, with 29 tackles, 26 interceptions, eight blocked shots and 42 clearances.
