Aston Villa are forced to deal with Premier League regulation on their final squad following more stars exit this summer.
Aston Villa are really going through a turbulent summer with their star exodus. After Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne, Evann Guessand, and the most recent one, Ezri Konsa, they could still be losing more figures before the deadline day with Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez as the next potential exit. There are doubts about Tammy Abraham and Lamare Bogarde’s future too.
According to the report in Birmingham mail, Aston Villa might be entangled with one issue on their transfer business.
“Aston Villa risk selling too many ‘Home Grown’ players before the summer transfer window closes.”
Unfortunately, most of their replacements are non English players or even non homegrown ones. Joao Gomes, Johan Manzambi, Alejandro Garnacho, Matteo Ruggeri and Zion Suzuki are all foreign players. Only Aaron Wan Bissaka who is actually a homegrown as he used to play for England in his youth before switching sides to DR Congo recently.
Each team in the Premier League must register a minimum eight homegrown players in their 25-man squad. Homegrown players are those who are registered in the clubs under FA or FA Wales for three seasons before the age of 21 years old.
Their potential exits, Martinez and Watkins, plus Abraham and Bogarde are all registered as homegrown. If they are all released, Villa could be lacking homegrown players.
In Villa’s squad, without them, there would be only seven homegrown players left. They are Ross Barkley, Matty Cash, Ian Maatsen, Tyrone Mings, Alejandro Garnacho, the new signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the young goalkeeper James Wright.
The best solution without any expenses would be promoting some figures from the reserve team. George Hemmings is certainly considerable for it. He deserves such chance as he has displayed fine form during the pre-season.
Villa also need to focus on signing the homegrown players in their targets. Signing at least two of them would be an ideal solution. Fikayo Tomori is definitely one they should be securing. He is the ideal replacement for Ezri Konsa.
Another name to chase would be Folarin Bolagun. The USMNT forward is a perfect figure to snatch as Watkins’ successor. Bolagun is still 25 years old and supposedly at the peak of his career with the Champions League and Premier League experience.
He scored three goals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and had an impressive form with Monaco last season. He netted 19 goals and set up five times in 43 games in all competitions. Previously, he thrived with Stade Reims on loan scoring 22 goals and providing three assists in the 2022/23 campaign.
The question is whether Villa are willing to meet Monaco’s demand. Les Monegasques reportedly value him about £ 51 million, considering the fact that he still has two years remaining in his contract. The Lions will also be in a tussle to secure his signature with Barcelona and Tottenham as their contender.
