Leeds United have agreed a fee of €10 million with Borussia Monchengladbach for experienced Swiss international defender Nico Elvedi.
The transfer was confirmed by renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who reported that a club-to-club agreement has been reached for a fee worth £6.8 million plus add-ons.
German transfer expert Florian Plettenberg added further detail, revealing the deal also includes a 15 percent sell-on clause in favour of Borussia Monchengladbach.
The relatively modest fee reflects Elvedi’s contract situation, with the 29-year-old having just one year remaining on his current deal at the Bundesliga club.
Elvedi made 364 appearances for Borussia Monchengladbach during his time in Germany, establishing himself as one of the more reliable defenders in the Bundesliga.
The Swiss international was noticeably absent from Gladbach’s friendly fixture against Aston Villa as the move entered its final stages and the transfer drew closer to completion.
Elvedi is set to become Leeds United’s fourth signing of the summer, joining goalkeeper James Trafford, World Cup starlet Tarik Muharemovic, and free agent Harry Wilson at Elland Road.
The arrival of Elvedi is also expected to have consequences for the Leeds squad, reportedly opening the door for defender Sebastiaan Bornauw to depart and join Hamburg for a modest fee.
That deal involving Bornauw is now said to be expected to conclude very quickly, with reports suggesting the move to Hamburg could be wrapped up in short order.
Leeds have prioritised adding depth to their squad this summer, and Elvedi’s experience at the highest level of German football makes him a pragmatic addition to the defensive ranks.
The 29-year-old brings considerable Bundesliga pedigree to a Leeds side that will be looking to establish themselves firmly back in the Premier League this season.
With the transfer window still active and clubs working hard to finalise their squads, Leeds appear to be making shrewd late moves to ensure they have the quality and cover needed across the squad.
