Aston Villa’s talks for one of their targets from a Premier League rival in this summer’s transfer window have currently stalled.
Aston Villa are still hunting for more names to add quality to their squad depth. They are currently linked with several names, and two of them played for the same team last season, Joao Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr.
Villa have reportedly been in a tussle with Newcastle United to sign the former, but they have held talks with Tottenham for the latter. Unfortunately, those talks have not developed as expected. According to tothelaneandback.com, their negotiations have cooled down.

Tottenham appear to prefer a permanent sale. Roberto De Zerbi’s side sees Pape Sarr as only a backup option in the squad, especially following the arrival of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
Last season, the Senegalese international struggled for consistency. He featured 37 times but contributed only two goals and four assists in all competitions. That was a decline compared to the 2024/25 season, when he helped Spurs win the Europa League.
Thus, Spurs prefer to get rid of him, with the potential asking price set at up to £30 million. The contract of the versatile midfielder who could be deployed as the number six and number ten role expires in 2030.
Nevertheless, Aston Villa would rather sign him on loan first, with an option or obligation to make the move permanent at the end of the season. They have to be careful with their spending due to their recent fine from UEFA, as well as the need to comply with all financial regulations.
Despite the stalled negotiations, the move is still very likely, probably later on deadline day. Villa are not the only potential suitors for the 23-year-old midfielder. Brentford and Napoli are also interested in signing him.
The Bees see the former Metz man as a suitable figure to fill the void left by Jordan Henderson, who has plied his trade to Chelsea. Meanwhile, Il Partenopei are looking for a replacement for Frank Zambo Anguissa.
If either of them is ready to meet Spurs’ demands, it could be a blow for The Lions. De Zerbi could also become more lenient in his stance if Tottenham fail to offload him before deadline day.
The midfielder, who featured in two games at the FIFA World Cup, could be a great addition to Villa’s second line. He could offer various option for Emery on the second line despite having signed Johan Manzambi, and Joao Gomes in the midfield.
It will be interesting to see whether they make a move immediately or wait until near the end of the transfer window for the versatile midfielder, who has registered 11 goals and 11 assists in 141 games for Spurs since joining in 2021.
