Aston Villa might have to sell another star this summer despite the prospect of his contract renewal this summer.
Aston Villa transfer business is definitely not over yet. They have been monitoring the targets and making approaches to the potential ones as the deadline day in the summer transfer window is already less than a month.
Unfortunately, to bolster their squad, Villa will have to make another major sale. The possible two stars who could be on their way out of West Midlands are the England duo, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins. Instead of the latter who has been on the headlines earlier to move out of Villa Park, it is more of the former who is more likely to leave.
Arsenal and Liverpool have registered their interest and expected to submit their bid. Villa would definitely only consider selling him at the right price. Based on the report in TalkSport, the issue might be related to his salary in the new contract.
“Should he look to sign a new contract, Konsa may demand wages on a similar level to his World Cup centre-back partner Marc Guehi.”
Konsa is still under the contract until 2028. Initially, he was not under consideration to move out. In fact, even the player himself might not plan to leave.
However, the situation changes after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Konsa became the mainstay in Thomas Tuchel’s England as he featured in eight games. He also bagged one goal too, in the third-place playoff versus France.
His form impressed two top potential suitors, Arsenal and Liverpool. The Gunners especially have been keen to strengthen their defense line and Konsa fits the profile they look for. Villa might be selling him around £65 million.
The defender who joined Villa in 2019 from Brentford for just £16 million currently earns £75,000 per week. Should he renew the contract, he might be inquiring about an improved salary. If he wants to match Guehi’s salary, Villa would need to agree on £ 300,000 per week.
According to the former Aston Villa star, Gabriel Agbonlahor, if that amount is what Konsa demand in his contract extension, then Unai Emery would have to be ready to lose him.
“Aston Villa can’t pay that… he’s probably thinking, ‘I deserve that’ and I don’t think anyone at Aston Villa will say he doesn’t. He does but Aston Villa can’t pay that.
“That’s the problem Aston Villa have got. Do they sell him this summer, or do they wait until next summer where you’re not going to get the £70-80 million? Whatever you want for him. It might be £40million, that’s the one I worry about.
“It’s hard to keep hold of them when they’re starting for England. Look at Morgan Rogers, he’s playing for England.”
The latest UEFA fine for breaching the SCR regulations could be even forcing Villa to sell him, while they can. No wonder that Emery is targeting more players for the backline as he might be aware it would be challenging to keep hold of the defender.
