Chelsea are closing in on the double signing of Premier League veterans Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck as the club’s summer recruitment drive accelerates under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
The West London club is finalising both deals with the aim of completing all formalities within the coming days, representing a significant shift in transfer strategy toward experienced leadership.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news on X, confirming that negotiations for both players have entered their final stages.
Romano’s post stated: “Chelsea are closing in on both Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck deals to get all agreements done this week. Henderson and Welbeck both said yes to #CFC project; Jordan to leave Brentford as free agent. Negotiations progressing to final stages.”
Henderson, a former Liverpool captain, is set to join Chelsea as a free agent following a gentleman’s agreement with Brentford that allows him to depart should the right opportunity arise.
The veteran midfielder’s arrival would inject crucial experience and leadership qualities into what is otherwise a relatively young Chelsea squad heading into a demanding campaign.
Meanwhile, 35-year-old Welbeck is expected to make the move from Brighton after earning the direct approval of Alonso following an impressive season in which he scored 14 goals.
Both players have already given the green light to Chelsea’s project, meaning the club must now finalise only the remaining contractual details to push both transfers over the line.
Despite the incoming arrival of Welbeck, Joao Pedro will remain Alonso’s first-choice striker and the focal point of Chelsea’s attacking play this season.
The 24-year-old Brazilian forward made a stunning impression during Alonso’s managerial debut, scoring a hat-trick in nine minutes during a thrilling 6-4 pre-season victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.
Welbeck’s addition is designed to offer depth, competition, and rotation across a multi-competition schedule rather than to challenge Pedro’s status as the club’s primary striker.
Alonso is working to build a versatile and experienced forward line capable of handling the demands of Premier League football alongside other competitions throughout the season.
The double swoop signals a clear intent from Chelsea to balance youth with proven Premier League know-how as the club looks to hit the ground running under their new manager.
