This week’s 2026 U.S. Junior Amateur featured a massive field of 264 players. Even with such a large roster of competitors, 18-year-old Noah Maclauchlan needed a little help to sneak into the event at Saucon Valley as an alternate.
Now, Maclauchlan is the U.S. Junior Amateur champion.
Maclauchlan’s shocking run from irrelevance to history culminated with a huge upset over the tournament favorite, Miles Russell.
Russell, 17, is one of the most promising junior golfers in recent history. His long run as the No. 1-ranked player in the AJGA boys’ golf ranking has drawn comparisons to the game’s greats.
Those greats include Tiger Woods, whose son Charlie is good friends with Russell. Charlie helped Russell qualify for the 2026 U.S. Open as his caddie, and both have committed to play college golf at Florida State (Charlie lost a playoff for the final spot in the match-play portion of this week’s U.S. Junior Amateur).
Tiger famously won three straight U.S. Junior Amateur titles, before winning three straight U.S. Amateurs and eventually three U.S. Opens.
When Russell pulled off a phenomenal performance in Friday’s quarter- and semifinals at the U.S. Junior Amateur, going 14 under over 30 holes across two matches, he seemed destined to join Tiger on the list of Junior Amateur champions.
Only Maclauchlan stood in his way. Heading into the 36-hole final match, the odds were about as lopsided as it gets. Maclauchlan was ranked 2,047th in the World Amateur Ranking. Russell was ranked 7th.
But right out of the gate, Maclauchlan looked to be the superior player. The massive underdog quickly built a 3-up lead through the first six holes.
Russell fought back with three consecutive wins from 11-13, and when he made birdie at the par-5 15th, Russell found himself with a 1-up lead.
That ended up being Russell’s last run of the day. Maclauchlan quickly evened the match at 16 and then reclaimed the lead at 17. Over the next 11 holes, Maclauchlan steadily increased his lead to 6 up and eventually closed out a 6-and-5 victory on the 31st hole.
The improbable win earned Maclauchlan a spot in the 2027 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, a fact the champion had difficulty believing Saturday night after clinching the win.
“It’s pretty surreal to think I’ll be at the U.S. Open next year!” Maclauchlan said following his victory. “This is by far the most memorable championship I’ve ever played.”
