Aston Villa linked to top goalkeeper from Eastern Europe

Aston Villa have been in the mix to be linked to another goalkeeper target but from Eastern Europe this time.

Aston Villa transfer continues with more players expected to join. Having lost Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne, and perhaps some more, Villa have been keeping tabs on one of the top figure between the sticks. Benfica’s Anatoly Trubin has been considered one of the goalkeeper with potentials to shine at the elite level.

Unfortunately, Unai Emery’s side are not the only ones which have registered their interest, as GiveMeSport reported.

“We understand both Real Madrid and Aston Villa also hold an interest in Trubin as they assess their goalkeeping options.”

His contract situation

Trubin joined Benfica in 2023 and signed a contract until 2028. His price tag is £34.5 million, which is quite affordable for either Los Blancos and The Lions.

Interestingly, Juventus join the race too. The Italian giant which has been linked to Emiliano Martinez recently is also keen on signing the Ukrainian international, should they fail to secure Martinez’s move.

Aston Villa, on the other hand, will only sign him if Martinez does leave. So far the negotiation between Villa and Juventus has been stalled due to La Vecchia Signora’s inability to meet their demand. The Clarets and Blue are not interested in lowering it as mentioned on the news before.

Such could give the advantage for Real Madrid to make approach to Trubin. The goalkeeper is open to reunite with Jose Mourinho who is now in charge of Los Merengues. However, the La Liga giant would have to sell Andrey Lunin first. Trubin would provide competition to Thibault Cortois, meaning that the 24-year old shot stopper will not be guaranteed regular minutes on the pitch.

How good is Anatoliy Trubin

Trubin has been the key man in Benfica since he arrived in Da Luz. He has made 149 appearances with 49 clean sheets. He has delivered fine contribution not only in the domestic competitions but also in the continental ones.

Some of the notable performance from the former Shakhtar Donetsk man were when he kept clean sheet in a 4-0 and 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid and Juventus at the league phase of UCL 2024/25. He even scored one when his team thumped Real Madrid 4-2 last season. Trubin was instrumental too when Benfica defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which helped them go through the knockout stage.

Based on the data in FotMob, the goalkeeper with only 29 international caps has 75.3 % saving percentage, 50 % penalty saves, and 12 high claims last season in Liga Portugal. He could act as sweeper six times too.

Meanwhile, his successful passes is impressive too with 72.8 %, while the accurate long ball delivery in 36.2 %. Trubin is certainly the best choice to replace Martinez, should he force his exit this summer. His experience at the top level and ability to perform well in big games as well as deliver consistent form is what Emery needs in shot stopper.
