Inter Miami are under investigation by Major League Soccer after officially announcing the signing of Brazil midfielder Casemiro from Manchester United.

The 34-year-old joined Miami on a deal running to the end of the 2027 MLS campaign, with an option to extend through to June 2029.

MLS released a statement confirming it was “reviewing a tampering allegation” against Inter Miami moments after the club announced the transfer.

“The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete,” the league said in its statement.

The investigation centres on Casemiro’s discovery rights, an MLS regulation that grants a specific club first refusal on signing a player.

Los Angeles Galaxy held those discovery rights for Casemiro, though Inter Miami claimed they had acquired them from the Galaxy prior to announcing the signing.

LA Galaxy confirmed a resolution had been reached, stating: “The LA Galaxy and Inter Miami CF have reached a settlement for the discovery priority to sign Casemiro, and the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation currently open with Major League Soccer.”

Casemiro announced in January that he would leave Old Trafford following a mutual decision not to renew his contract at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The Brazilian made 160 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 26 goals and providing 14 assists, winning one EFL Cup and one FA Cup during his time at the club.

He also won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid before his move to United in 2022 and represented Brazil at this summer’s World Cup, where they reached the last 16.

“What motivates me the most, and I think this is true for every player, is winning and continuing to grow,” Casemiro said following the announcement of his move to Miami.

Inter Miami co-owner Sir David Beckham had expressed his delight ahead of news of the investigation breaking, saying: “He is a winner who has achieved so much in the game and after such an incredible career with Real Madrid and Manchester United I’m delighted that he’s decided to make Miami his next home.”

At Miami, Casemiro will link up with former Real Madrid and Manchester United team-mate Sergio Reguilon, as well as World Cup finalists Lionel Messi and Rodrigo de Paul.

This is not the first time Inter Miami have faced scrutiny over their transfer activity in the league.

In 2021, the club were fined $2m after breaching MLS rules in connection with the signing of France midfielder Blaise Matuidi from Juventus the previous year.

MLS ruled that Matuidi had been paid more than the permitted amount, effectively giving Inter Miami four designated players rather than the allowed three.

The designated player rule, commonly known as the Beckham Rule, was introduced when Beckham himself joined Los Angeles Galaxy back in 2007.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have moved quickly to replace Casemiro in midfield, signing Andrey Santos for £50m from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35m this window.
