Middlesbrough are in advanced talks to sign Tottenham striker Will Lankshear on a permanent deal, with the Championship club seemingly meeting Spurs’ demands.
Earlier approaches from Sporting CP, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton were all rebuffed by Tottenham, who rejected eight-figure proposals from all three clubs.
Those bids included both straight permanent transfers and loan arrangements with an obligation to buy, but none of them satisfied Tottenham’s valuation of the 21-year-old.
Middlesbrough have monitored Lankshear for several years, and head coach Kim Hellberg attempted to bring him to the Riverside Stadium during the January transfer window.
The young striker opted to stay at Oxford United to honour his season-long loan agreement, despite the club’s eventual relegation to League One.
Lankshear made a strong case for himself during his time at Oxford, scoring 11 goals and contributing four assists across 44 Championship appearances.
The forward joined Tottenham from Southampton, though he previously came through Arsenal’s academy before making his way to Spurs.
He has made six competitive appearances for Tottenham, with his first professional goal arriving in the Europa League clash against Galatasaray back in November 2024.
Middlesbrough are set to receive in the region of £15million from the sell-on clause activated by Morgan Rogers’ triple-figure transfer to Chelsea, and it appears those funds are being reinvested directly into this deal.
It has already been a significant summer of business for Tottenham, with around £240million spent to bring in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have all arrived on free transfers as Robert De Zerbi continues to shape his squad ahead of the new season.
Tottenham have also been linked with Eli Kroupi Junior of Bournemouth, while interest in Manchester City winger Savinho has carried over from last summer.
On the departures front, Luka Vuskovic joined Brighton in a £50million deal despite never making a competitive appearance for the club.
Cristian Romero, Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence could all potentially follow Vuskovic and Lankshear through the exit door this summer.
Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United have had bids for Bergvall rejected, while Inter Milan hold an interest in Spence following an impressive World Cup tournament.
Club captain Romero has attracted interest from clubs in Spain and Italy, though any immediate transfer could be complicated after he was forced off in the World Cup final with an injury.
Argentina were beaten by Spain in that showpiece clash at MetLife Stadium, with Tottenham’s Pedro Porro on the winning side after a standout tournament.
