Aston Villa has been prepared to make a move for the unwanted Bayern Munich man in this summer transfer window.
Aston Villa have been struck by the sudden departure of their key men recently. Youri Tielemans has completed his move to Manchester United. The left back Lucas Digne should be next as PSG is set to pay for his low release clause.
What’s worse, they might not be the last to leave but could be followed by some more players who have been linked to ply their trade elsewhere. Emiliano Martinez, Morgan Rogers, even Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins have been eyed by several clubs.
According to the report in GivemeSport, Villa is ready to pounce the unwanted player from Bundesliga giant who played for Spurs last season.
“Villa are now being linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha, who is up for sale this summer.
The 31-year old defensive midfielder has just returned from his loan spell from Tottenham. Bayern was expecting Spurs to activate the option to sign him permanently. Unfortunately, it did not happen despite the Portuguese making regular appearances and crucial contributions last season.
The midfielder whose contract expires in summer 2028 does not appear to be included in Vincent Kompany’s plan next season. With still two years left in his contract, Die Roten are hoping to sell him permanently for £21 million.
There has been an offer from the unnamed side from Saudi Pro League. Yet, he refuses to switch sides to the Middle East. Palhinha prefers to stay in Europe.
Such news surely boosts Aston Villa’s chance to sign him. They need to make a move immediately otherwise, other clubs could be taking advantage of their slow approach. Benfica, for example, have started to keep tabs on him. Their new manager, Marcos Silva, is aiming for a reunion with Palhinha. They both worked together in Fulham from 2022 to 2024.
Palhinha is probably not entirely the same type of midfielder as Tielemans but he can be taking the number eight role the Belgian normally is employed. His versatility as central midfielder, defensive midfielder or even centre back, when necessary.
Last season with Spurs, he still managed to put on a positive display on his ability. The Portugal international who missed out the World Cup final squad had a fine contribution too by scoring seven goals and three assists in 45 games.
Palhinha also could step up and contribute direcly in the big vital game. He scored a winning goal against Wolves and Everton to salvage Spurs in the top flight. The former Sporting Braga man also netted one when The North London side crushed Manchester City 2-0 at the beginning of the season.
Perhaps the only concern is his age. Palhinha is already 31 years old and might only become reliable for a short term. So, it will be interesting to see if Villa is willing to snatch him permanently or by loan deal at first.
