Aston Villa fans might have been wondering why their key men have suddenly decided to leave within the space of a few days.
Aston Villa have been hit by the rather sudden departures of two of their key players from the past three seasons, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne. Neither of them has returned to Bodymoor Heath yet. The latter is still at the World Cup. Such developments have certainly forced the Lions to reconsider their transfer plans.
Ideally, Villa would have preferred to negotiate properly with the players’ agents before eventually sanctioning their departures. Yet, this latest development at Villa Park has stunned almost all Aston Villa fans. So, what could be the reason behind these moves happening almost simultaneously?
This issue is undoubtedly one of the biggest concerns, as it limits the club’s ability to strengthen the squad. It is not only about the budget available for new signings but also the funds required to extend players’ contracts. They may not be able to offer significant pay rises to their current players.
This is probably why Villa have yet to offer Tielemans a new contract. They may still be waiting for him to return after the World Cup. The Belgian international is currently suffering an injury. He even missed out the quarterfinal clash versus Spain.
As for Digne, Villa may still have confidence in keeping him this season, considering his experience and continued reliability, while planning to find a long-term replacement later.
The recent UEFA fine for breaching the Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rule might also be a concern for the players. They could be aware that Villa may struggle to build a squad capable of competing strongly in the Champions League next season, as financial limitations could make it harder to attract top transfer targets.
Villa have just ended their 30-year trophy drought, and Unai Emery is still aiming for more success. However, for some players, winning the Europa League might be viewed as the club’s highest realistic achievement at the moment. Digne and Tielemans may still be eager to win more trophies, but they might believe they would have a better chance of enjoying sustained success at clubs such as PSG or Manchester United.
They may lack confidence that the Clarets and Blue can continue adding major honours. In their minds, Villa could still challenge for domestic trophies such as the FA Cup or EFL Cup, but perhaps not the Premier League or the Champions League in the near future—competitions that Digne and Tielemans may hope to win before the end of their careers. League titles are certainly more appealing, and they may believe their next clubs offer a greater opportunity to achieve that.
Villa might not have anticipated that Tielemans and Digne would become such key figures in the club’s continental success over the past few seasons. Neither was expected to be an undisputed starter when he first arrived. As a result, Villa may not have set particularly high release clauses for either player.
Both have since produced outstanding performances, especially Digne, who is already 32 years old. In fact, their excellent form earned them places in their respective World Cup squads, and both featured in almost every match during the tournament.
As a result, their reported release clauses—£35 million for Tielemans and £10 million for Digne—feel like a bargain for the players in such quality. Wealthier clubs such as Manchester United and PSG can comfortably afford those fees.
Now, Unai Emery’s priority will be to find suitable replacements while keeping hold of the club’s remaining key players for next season. Losing more stars like Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Emiliano Martinez, or even Ollie Watkins later this summer would be a huge blow for Villa, as finding players of similar quality within a limited timeframe—and under existing financial restrictions—would be far from easy.
