Mateus Fernandes Cites Roberto De Zerbi As “Key Part” Of Decision To Join Tottenham Over Manchester United

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, with the young Portuguese midfielder opening up about his reasons for choosing Spurs.

The 21-year-old has been one of the most talked-about transfer targets this summer, attracting interest from several top clubs before his move was finalised.

Manchester United were among the clubs pushing hardest to land Fernandes, with ESPN reporter Rob Dawson confirming the Red Devils made a significant effort to secure the deal.

However, United ultimately chose not to match Tottenham’s bid, and there were doubts within the club about just how eager Fernandes was to join them specifically.

Dawson noted that United “never felt clear on his preference of club during talks,” which stood in contrast to the clarity they received from other recent signings.

As Dawson wrote: “Mbeumo and Cunha were desperate to join last summer and United didn’t have the same feeling with Fernandes.”

That apparent ambiguity from Fernandes’ side now makes more sense given what the player has said since completing his move to north London.

Speaking on Tottenham’s official website, Fernandes made clear that head coach Roberto De Zerbi played a central role in convincing him to sign for Spurs this summer.

Fernandes said: “I’m very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the Head Coach was a key part of why I have decided to join.”

He added: “When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game.”

The Portugal international also expressed his eagerness to get going, saying: “I can’t wait to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the Club.”

De Zerbi has earned a strong reputation in football management, having impressed during his time in the Premier League with Brighton before his move to Spurs.

His attacking, high-energy style of play appears to be a significant draw for players like Fernandes, who clearly sees the project at Tottenham as an exciting one.

Adding a technically gifted and dynamic young midfielder to the squad will help De Zerbi implement his preferred system more effectively at the club.

According to the Independent, Tottenham’s summer spending is far from finished, with Rafael Leao, Savinho, Eli Junior Kroupi, and James Trafford also identified as targets.
