Fabrizio Romano Reveals Sandro Tonali Only Ever Wanted Tottenham Despite Arsenal And Manchester City Links

Fabrizio Romano has shut down speculation of a three-way transfer battle, insisting Sandro Tonali had only one destination in mind from the very beginning.

The Italian transfer expert made clear that reports linking the Newcastle United midfielder with Arsenal and Manchester City never reflected reality.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano was emphatic in dismissing the narrative that Tonali had been weighing up multiple clubs before settling on a decision.

According to Romano, Tonali handed Tottenham his immediate green light the moment the club made their approach, driven by his trust in manager Roberto De Zerbi’s project.

“I never came here telling you Man City, telling you Arsenal interest, telling you Tonali doesn’t want to go to Tottenham,” Romano stated firmly.

“Many people said Tonali preferred Arsenal, or Manchester City. But Tonali’s preference was clear from that day.”

Romano revealed Tonali’s stance was established as early as June 15, the date Romano himself first broke the exclusive story of Spurs’ interest.

Personal terms were agreed that same afternoon, meaning the two weeks of subsequent club-to-club negotiations were largely a procedural formality.

Romano confirmed: “Tonali agreed personal terms on 15 June with Tottenham, and the negotiation took two weeks — but now the agreement is done. It’s a record deal for Tottenham. Two days ago I told you about the record deal for [Mathys] Fernandez — that was £85 million. Now, 48 hours later, another record deal: Sandro Tonali is £92.5 million, plus £7.5 million in add-ons. So £100 million total for Sandro Tonali to Tottenham — the most expensive Italian player in the history of the game.”

The journalist also confirmed all the major steps are now complete: “Newcastle have accepted the proposal, and everything has been completed.”

The £100 million deal makes Tonali not only the most expensive signing in Tottenham’s history but also the most expensive Italian player ever to move between clubs in the history of the game.

As reported by Football Paparazzi, the Italy international is set to become the highest-paid player in Tottenham history, earning a remarkable £275,000 per week on a six-year contract.

This extraordinary financial commitment follows the £85 million signing of Mateus Fernandes just 48 hours earlier, with Spurs breaking their own wage records twice in two days.

Tottenham have also reinforced their defence this summer, signing Jan Paul van Hecke for £52 million, while Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka have arrived on free transfers.

After two consecutive 17th-place Premier League finishes, Spurs are mounting one of the most ambitious recruitment drives the club has ever undertaken under De Zerbi.

The scale of investment signals that Tottenham’s ownership is fully committed to backing their manager as the club looks to push back toward the upper reaches of the Premier League table in the 2026/27 season.
