Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal worth up to £100million with Newcastle United to secure the services of midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Spurs have been tracking the Italian international for the majority of the summer, making their move as soon as the transfer window opened for business.
Newcastle initially rejected an offer believed to be in the region of £80million, firmly rejecting Tottenham’s first approach for their prized asset.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side refused to be deterred, however, returning with an improved proposal that has now convinced Newcastle to sanction the sale.
The agreed fee is structured as an initial £92.5million, with a further £7.5million in add-ons dependent on multiple Champions League qualifications being achieved.
It represents a significant piece of business for Newcastle, who will now be tasked with finding a replacement for one of their most important players ahead of the new season.
For Tottenham, the signing of Tonali is the latest in a string of ambitious moves designed to reshape the first-team squad under De Zerbi’s guidance.
The Italian head coach arrived at the club in late March and managed to steer Spurs away from relegation, though the side could only finish 17th in the Premier League last season.
De Zerbi will be desperate to build on that platform, and the capture of Tonali represents a major statement of intent from the north London club heading into 2026/27.
Tottenham are also on the verge of completing an £85million deal for West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, with an agreement reportedly reached earlier this week.
The 21-year-old had been considered a primary target alongside Tonali, with supporters initially fearing that budget constraints would force the club to choose between the two players.
It now appears both will be lining up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season, giving De Zerbi a formidable new-look midfield to work with.
Spurs have also bolstered other areas of the squad, welcoming Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka as free agents during the current window.
Jan Paul van Hecke has also arrived from Brighton for £52million, further strengthening a defensive unit that was badly exposed throughout last season’s difficult campaign.
