Barcelona Set To Cover €15m Of Marc-Andre Ter Stegen’s Wages During Ajax Loan Move

Barcelona’s ongoing salary limit struggles continue to shape their transfer decisions, forcing the club into yet another complicated exit arrangement this summer.

Veteran goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, now 34, finds himself surplus to requirements despite signing a contract extension valid until 2028 just two years ago.

The arrival of Joan Garcia has effectively ended ter Stegen’s future at the club, pushing Barcelona to find a way to move the captain on as quickly as possible.

Last season, ter Stegen joined Girona on loan during the January transfer window, but his spell at Montilivi was cut short by an injury sustained just weeks after arriving.

Now the German shot-stopper is set to head to Ajax on loan for the upcoming season, reuniting him with manager Michel Sanchez for a second time in his career.

Ajax, however, are unwilling to shoulder the bulk of ter Stegen’s considerable wages, leaving Barcelona to make up the significant shortfall themselves.

According to Marca, Barcelona will cover around €15m over the course of the loan spell, which equates to roughly 10 to 15 percent of his total salary for the year.

That figure, approximately £12.94m, is a notable outlay for a club that has spent years wrestling with an inflated wage bill and a restricted salary limit imposed by La Liga.

The financial engineering required to keep Barcelona competitive has been well-documented, and the ter Stegen situation represents another chapter in that ongoing story.

Beyond the goalkeeper’s exit, Barcelona still face the task of registering Anthony Gordon, with the fee alone sitting at around €16m and his full wage package expected to push costs to approximately €30m.

Gordon’s registration will require Barcelona to free up sufficient space within their salary limit, and ter Stegen’s departure could play a meaningful role in unlocking that capacity.

The club are expected to pursue further sales this summer as they look to ease the financial pressure and return within their La Liga-imposed salary limit threshold.
