Newcastle United have made their position crystal clear, declaring Bruno Guimaraes “not for sale” after intermediaries reportedly tested the water with a £45million enquiry.
No formal bid has been submitted by Arsenal, and no direct club-to-club communication has taken place between the two sides at this stage.
The approach came through intermediaries rather than official channels, and Newcastle swiftly dismissed it without entertaining further discussion on the matter.
Bruno Guimaraes is understood to be on Arsenal’s radar as a more cost-effective alternative to Sandro Tonali, who had been offered to the Gunners through his agency GR Sports last week.
Arsenal showed no interest in meeting Tonali’s £275,000 per week wage demands, nor the ten per cent agent cut attached to what would have been an enormous transfer fee.
Reports from the last 24 hours suggest Newcastle have since tabled a new £200,000 per week contract offer to the Brazilian midfielder in a bid to secure his future at the club.
However, sources close to the negotiations indicate that financial terms and contract duration are not the primary drivers behind Bruno’s decision-making process.
The sporting project at Newcastle is said to sit at the forefront of his priorities, with the club unable to offer European football next season and yet to complete a significant signing this summer.
Bruno’s representatives, who travelled to the World Cup without a fresh contract offer from United, are understood to be monitoring developments on Tyneside from a distance before making any decisions.
Should the midfielder fail to commit to a new deal, his market value could significantly diminish over the coming transfer windows as his current contract nears its conclusion.
Arsenal are currently trying to establish whether there is a threshold at which a deal could become viable, with the saga drawing comparisons to Alexander Isak’s departure last summer.
In that case, weeks of discussions through intermediaries eventually led to a formal £110million bid for the Swedish striker, which was rejected by Newcastle on August 1.
That precedent suggests Arsenal’s pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes could extend throughout the World Cup period and potentially beyond, though Newcastle officials remain composed regarding their stance.
Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke has spoken openly about the club’s intent to strengthen this summer, telling NBC Sports: “The business never stops. And so, right now there are other teams that are already trying to strengthen to come at us for next season.”
Kroenke added: “We’ve already had a few conversations about different areas that we think we can improve, both on and off the pitch. We are looking forward to getting that going this summer.”
He also acknowledged the unique nature of this transfer window, saying: “It is going to be an interesting one because of the World Cup, but fortunately everybody is coming to the United States, so I don’t have to travel for once.”
Other midfielders being linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium include Morgan Rogers, Felix Nmecha, and Manu Kone as the Gunners look to bolster their options.
