Fede Valverde And Manuel Ugarte Lead Uruguay Player Revolt Against Marcelo Bielsa Before Spain Showdown

Uruguay face a win-or-bust situation against Spain in their final World Cup group game, but serious internal tensions have emerged inside the camp.

Reports from Uruguay indicate that several senior players directly confronted manager Marcelo Bielsa just two days before the decisive clash in Guadalajara.

According to ESPN correspondent Jose Ramon Fernandez and radio station El Espectador, Fede Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Sergio Rochet and Manuel Ugarte all approached Bielsa to raise their concerns.

The players told Bielsa that his methods were not to their liking and that the physical demands being placed on the squad needed to change immediately.

They also reportedly disagreed with his tactical approach heading into the crucial game against Spain, adding further pressure to an already fractured relationship.

The squad has been hit by an injury crisis, and the players directly blame Bielsa’s excessive demands in training as the root cause of those physical problems.

Bielsa has not backed down in response to the challenge from his players, reportedly demanding that his side attack Spain in the upcoming fixture.

This confrontation is not entirely surprising given that last year Bielsa himself admitted in a press conference that he was “toxic”, following widespread reports of dressing room unrest.

It has since been confirmed that Bielsa will leave the Uruguayan national setup following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, regardless of the outcome.

The Argentine coach’s tenure with Uruguay began promisingly enough, as he guided them to the top of the South American World Cup qualifying table in its opening stages.

That impressive run included notable victories over both Brazil and Argentina, with the win in Buenos Aires particularly underlining Bielsa’s initial impact on the squad.

However, results deteriorated significantly in the latter stages of qualifying, with Uruguay winning just two of their final seven games and eventually finishing fourth.

The opening two group games at the World Cup have done little to suggest the situation has improved, with the camp atmosphere reportedly growing increasingly difficult.

Uruguay now face the prospect of trying to eliminate a formidable Spain side while managing a very public breakdown in trust between the squad and their manager.
