Aston Villa remain uncertain about their decision regarding one of their young stars’ future.
Aston Villa appear to still be unsure about one of their young players, Lamare Bogarde. His recent form has attracted interest from other clubs, despite mostly being used as a utility player so far.
According to a report in the Birmingham Mail, Villa are expected to hold talks over a contract extension.
“The 22-year-old has held initial talks over a new contract; however, nothing is close to being agreed on fresh terms. It leaves a degree of uncertainty surrounding Bogarde this summer, with Villa not opposed to selling him if the right offer arrives.”
Bogarde is under contract until 2028. However, with growing interest from other clubs, including Premier League rivals, Villa are aware that he could also represent a valuable sale.
His current value is £15.5 million and, given his potential and the length of his contract, Villa could place a higher price tag on him should a suitable offer arrive. So far, two clubs have shown interest in signing him: Sunderland and Brighton.
The Black Cats are interested in securing him on loan. They are competing in Europa League next season, and the Dutch youngster could be a valuable addition to their squad. Meanwhile, The Seagulls, which qualifies to UEFA Conference League, have also been keeping tabs on him. Both clubs could provide the regular playing time Bogarde needs.
The Rotterdam-born versatile defender has made 61 appearances under Unai Emery. Last season, he featured 44 times in all competitions, including 28 Premier League matches. However, Bogarde started only 11 of those games.
That already represents a significant improvement, as he made only 16 appearances in all competitions during the 2024/25 season. Bogarde has been deployed mostly as a defensive midfielder, while also playing at right-back and centre-back.
Unfortunately, he lost his place in the crucial matches last season. The defensive midfield role was handed to the senior centre back, Victor Lindelof or Ross Barkley in the closing weeks of the campaign following Bogarde’s unconvincing performances in big games and the injuries suffered by Amadou Onana and Boubacar Kamara.
This is probably one of the reasons why Emery would not mind letting him leave should a lucrative offer arrive. There is still room for improvement in his form, which could be maximised through a loan spell. The Spanish manager shared his thoughts on Bogarde and his potential.
“His process is working individually, with the group, having experiences, sometimes being on loan at other teams. This season, it’s been a more consistent season for him. He achieved the level again yesterday, he played a fantastic match. His versatility is very important, playing as a midfielder or a centre-back or at right-back.”
