Newcastle United have turned down an £80 million offer from Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Sandro Tonali this week.
The Magpies are willing to let the Italy international leave St James’ Park, but only if their £100 million valuation is met in full.
Tottenham officially tabled the bid this week, though it was swiftly rejected by Newcastle as falling short of their firm asking price for the player.
Sandro Tonali has emerged as a key transfer target for Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi as he looks to reshape his squad this summer.
De Zerbi guided Tottenham away from relegation last season and is now pushing to bring in top talent as he builds toward a more competitive era for the club.
The Italian coach has already moved quickly in the transfer window, with Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi arriving at Spurs ahead of the new campaign.
A deal for Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke was also confirmed on Wednesday evening, further underscoring De Zerbi’s ambitions to overhaul the squad.
Tonali has also attracted interest from Manchester City, meaning Tottenham face competition if they are to secure the midfielder’s signature this summer.
Former Newcastle United forward Alan Shearer has weighed in on the potential move, expressing surprise at the prospect of Tonali heading to Spurs.
Shearer told Betfair: “Tottenham just avoided relegation. I get the attraction of London but going to Spurs who have finished so low over the last two years would be a surprise career move for Tonali in my eyes.”
The Newcastle legend acknowledged, however, that the club’s position would be straightforward if the player himself wants out of Tyneside.
Shearer added: “If he doesn’t want to be there, you put the price you want and if someone wants to pay it, and it looks as if it’ll have to be three figures, then you say thank you very much, get the £100million plus and you move on.”
Shearer also noted that Tottenham’s new manager and the appeal of London could serve as genuine draws for the Italian midfielder despite the club’s recent struggles.
He said: “I know Spurs have a new manager and that may be a pull for him, London obviously. But in terms of the football club, look where they have finished the last two years.”
Shearer also pointed to Newcastle’s wider transfer business, noting: “It looks as though Liverpool have hijacked the move for Munoz, which would be a blow but Newcastle are trying to do business early, I think.”
He concluded: “If it is true that Liverpool have beaten them to Munoz, then perhaps Newcastle need to look at doing things a lot earlier and paying what they have to pay.”
