Tottenham Hotspur are pushing hard to reshape their midfield this summer, with two Premier League-tested names firmly in their sights.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Spurs are “very focused” on signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United ahead of the new season.
Alongside that pursuit, Tottenham have also made “direct contact” with the agent of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to Romano.
Fernandes has impressed during his time with West Ham, demonstrating the composure and technical quality that Spurs are desperately seeking in the engine room.
Tonali, the Italian international, has similarly shown his calibre in the Premier League at Newcastle, establishing himself as one of the division’s more commanding central midfielders.
Both players have attracted attention from multiple top clubs, with Manchester United and Arsenal also reported to have interest in the pair.
Those rival clubs carry the added appeal of Champions League football, which gives them a significant advantage in any transfer negotiations this summer.
Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League last season, a difficult reality that threatens to undermine their ability to attract elite-level talent to North London.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi will be expected to engineer a dramatic turnaround at the club, but he will require meaningful backing from the hierarchy in the transfer market.
Beyond midfield, Spurs are also said to be targeting a striker and an additional quality winger before the transfer window closes.
The club has already been active in the market this summer, signalling a clear intent to overhaul a squad that dramatically underperformed last season.
Securing either Tonali or Fernandes would represent a significant statement of ambition from Tottenham as De Zerbi looks to put his stamp on the side.
