Manchester United have reportedly begun work on a double transfer raid targeting West Ham United stars Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville this summer.
The Red Devils have identified the relegated Hammers duo as key targets, with discussions said to have already taken place between the clubs.
West Ham are demanding as much as £140m for the pair combined, while United are pushing to pay less than that figure, according to the Daily Mail.
The east London club’s relegation from the Premier League to the Championship has left them facing a serious battle to hold onto their most valuable assets.
Fernandes in particular caught the eye during West Ham’s disappointing campaign, standing out as one of the few genuine bright spots in a difficult season.
The Times has reported that the Portuguese midfielder could cost around £80m, with United understood to be the frontrunners to secure his signature.
If that figure is accurate, it would suggest West Ham are valuing Summerville at somewhere in the region of £60m to reach their overall asking price.
That valuation for the Dutch winger looks harder to justify on paper, with Summerville managing just seven goals and two assists from out wide during the season just gone.
While there is an argument that Summerville could produce more in a stronger squad with better players around him, spending that kind of money on the position still appears to be a gamble for United.
Manager Michael Carrick already oversaw the arrival of a whole new front three last summer, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko all brought to Old Trafford.
With those options already in place, questions will naturally be raised about whether Summerville would even command a regular starting spot in Carrick’s side.
Fernandes remains the more straightforward sell as a target, with the midfielder widely regarded as an elite young talent capable of making an immediate impact at a top club.
United will need to bridge the gap between their valuation and West Ham’s asking price if they are to push both deals over the line before the window closes.
