Aston Villa eyeing Top Asian goalkeeper in European League

Aston Villa are currently eyeing a top Asian goalkeeper competing in a major European league at the moment.

Aston Villa’s transfer business has begun, most likely with the exit of their first-choice goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine number one has reportedly been getting closer to plying his trade in Turin next season.

Consequently, The Lions need to make a move immediately, preferably before the World Cup ends, as it could potentially increase their target’s value should he feature, or even better, thrive in the tournament.

According to a report in GiveMeSport, top transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Villa have shortlisted one particular name.

“According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Zion Suzuki is among a list of three goalkeepers that Aston Villa are interested in ahead of the summer transfer window.”

His contract situation

The 23-year-old Japanese goalkeeper is one of the most exciting young talents between the sticks. He is still under contract with Italian outfit AC Parma until the summer of 2029, which puts the Gialloblu in the driving seat of any negotiations.

His price tag is likely to reach as much as £40 million. Aston Villa might have to consider that carefully before signing him. It is quite high for a young talent like him who lacks experience at the highest level. Nevertheless, The Lions have reportedly been scouting him for months.

Villa are apparently not the only potential suitors. Another Premier League side, Manchester United, are also keen on signing him to provide competition for Senne Lammens. They are likely to release two goalkeepers who joined under Erik ten Hag, Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana.

Suzuki’s form at Parma

The Newark-born shot-stopper moved to AC Parma in 2024. He has made 59 appearances so far and kept 13 clean sheets.

The former Saint-Truiden goalkeeper is a modern keeper too. Based on data from FotMob, his pass completion rate is 61.9%, while his accurate long-ball percentage is 37.9%. His save percentage is also impressive, reaching 70.2%, while he has saved 33.3% of penalties faced.

Suzuki first moved to Europe after leaving Urawa Red Diamonds to join Belgian side St. Truiden. He managed to play 32 games and keep six clean sheets. It was enough to impress the Gialloblu into securing his signature.

During his stint in the Italian top flight, Suzuki has produced some impressive performances. Last season, for example, he contributed well when Parma held Napoli to a 1-1 draw and only lost 1-0 to Cesc Fabregas’ Como.

The goalkeeper with 24 international caps also surprised fans as he helped Japan defeat England and Scotland with narrow 1-0 victories during the international break prior to the end of the season.

His price tag is bound to rise after the World Cup if he manages to maintain his form. The Blue Samurai, the nickname of the Japan national team, are one of the potential dark horses in the current World Cup. Villa need to make an approach immediately while also complying with their financial pressures.

Should he join The Clarets and Blue, it will be a historic move for Asian football. He would be the third Asian goalkeeper to play in English football after his predecessor long time ago, Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi (Japan) and Ali Al-Habsi (Oman) in the 2000s.
