Cody Gakpo Has Not Asked To Leave Liverpool Despite Exit Rumours, Journalist Claims

Cody Gakpo has not requested a transfer away from Liverpool, despite widespread speculation linking the Dutch forward with a summer exit.

Journalist Alex Crook has moved to dismiss the reports, stating clearly that suggestions Gakpo has asked to leave are wide of the mark.

Crook wrote: “Told suggestions Cody Gakpo has asked to leave #LFC are wide of the mark. Also nothing in his Egypt teammate Ahmed El-Shenawy’s claim Mo Salah could return to Anfield.”

The 27-year-old’s future had become a significant talking point after Liverpool parted ways with former head coach Arne Slot.

Gakpo was reportedly shocked by the decision to sack Slot and is said to be unhappy about his dismissal from the club.

Multiple reports had suggested the versatile forward was actively seeking a move away from Anfield ahead of next season.

However, Crook’s update directly contradicts those claims, suggesting the situation surrounding Gakpo is far less turbulent than previously reported.

Gakpo joined Liverpool in 2023 from PSV Eindhoven and quickly established himself as an important figure in Slot’s tactical plans across two seasons at the club.

During the 2024/25 campaign, he operated predominantly on the left flank and contributed heavily to Liverpool’s Premier League title triumph, finishing with 25 goal contributions.

His output dropped in the most recently concluded season, with Gakpo managing 15 goal contributions while being deployed more centrally, though the team as a whole endured a difficult campaign.

With four years still remaining on his Anfield contract, Gakpo remains a key part of Liverpool’s planning under new head coach Andoni Iraola, who is looking to add depth in wide areas.

Liverpool’s need for quality on the flanks has been amplified by the departure of Mohamed Salah, though that recruitment drive is not understood to be connected to any potential Gakpo exit.

Ahmed El-Shenawy, Salah’s international teammate with Egypt, had suggested the former Liverpool forward could make a sensational return to Anfield, but Crook also dismissed those claims as without foundation.
