Chelsea’s midfield looks set for a significant shake-up this summer as incoming manager Xabi Alonso prepares to stamp his authority on the squad from July 1.
The Blues endured a difficult 2025/26 Premier League campaign, finishing tenth and missing out on European football entirely, meaning wholesale changes are expected at Stamford Bridge.
Enzo Fernandez has emerged as one of the most likely departures, with the Argentina international reportedly keen to leave Chelsea when the summer transfer window officially opens later this month.
Chelsea are believed to be open to selling Fernandez, but only if a club submits an offer in the region of £120 million for the midfielder’s services.
That potential exit has prompted discussion about who could step in and partner Moises Caicedo in the centre of the park under Alonso’s new regime.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has been identified as the ideal candidate, with the 22-year-old valued at around £80 million following an impressive campaign with the Eagles.
Wharton registered one goal and eight assists across 53 appearances for Palace during the 2025/26 season, also playing his part as the club lifted the Conference League trophy.
Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has backed Wharton to thrive at Stamford Bridge, drawing a striking comparison to Manchester United legend Michael Carrick.
Speaking to OLBG, Townsend said: “I could see a Moises Caicedo and Adam Wharton axis as the future of Chelsea. If that’s the way that Xabi Alonso wants to do it, whether it’s a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-3, then I could absolutely see that working. I think Adam Wharton is a very classy player. He reminds me of Michael Carrick, the way Carrick used to play at Manchester United, he always looked like he had a bit of time on the ball.”
Townsend continued to explain what makes Wharton such a standout talent despite not fitting the mould of a modern athletic midfielder.
“He wasn’t the quickest, and you think people would be able to get him and close him down, but that rarely happened. I think Adam Wharton is similar. Whenever I watch him play, he always seemingly has his next pass ready, as soon as the ball comes to him, he knows what he’s doing,” Townsend added.
The former Chelsea man also suggested that Wharton’s recent England snub could push him towards seeking a fresh challenge at a bigger club.
Townsend said: “Missing out on the England squad may act as a little bit of an incentive to feel that it’s time to move on. Palace have just enjoyed some success and on the back of that, it would make perfect sense for him to move.”
He rounded off his assessment with a glowing verdict on Wharton’s suitability for Alonso’s Chelsea project alongside Caicedo, Santos, and Cole Palmer.
“I think his left foot alongside Caicedo could absolutely work at a place like Chelsea. In this era of players who are physical specimens, it’s nice to see someone who can do a bit of that but also has an elegance about his game. Adam Wharton has that. As I said, I think the nearest comparison I could make would be to someone like Michael Carrick. He plays in a very similar way. I think he’d suit Chelsea.”
