What is Aston Villa’s transfer plan like in summer 2026?

Aston Villa have seemingly laid out their transfer plan for the summer of 2026 once the 2025/26 season comes to an end.

Aston Villa have ended their campaign in style. After a woeful run in the opening six games, Unai Emery was able to guide them back to the Champions League and end their 30-year trophy drought.

Now, it is time to assess the squad and begin revamping the team ahead of competing at the highest level again in both domestic and continental competitions. Emery will have the final say in the club’s transfer business.

With financial restrictions still looming, Villa will have to spend carefully and effectively unless major sales are made. Such departures might be expected after the World Cup.

According to a report from The Athletic, The Clarets and Blue remain limited in their spending power.

“It is unlikely they (Aston Villa) will be able to surpass the current £50m fee for club-record signing Amadou Onana. Instead, they must shop in a lower price bracket.”

In the meantime, The Lions will need to make several key decisions regarding their transfer plans.

The Prioritised Positions

Villa’s current squad is clearly in need of reinforcement in certain areas, with some positions taking priority over others. The wide areas are one of them. Emery has been pushing to sign quick wingers who can penetrate the final third and also help defend the flanks effectively.

Their current options on the wing have not been entirely convincing. Jadon Sancho was perhaps the closest fit, but he has never managed to reproduce the form of his peak years while wearing a Villa shirt. Meanwhile, Harvey Elliott and Leon Bailey have not impressed Emery enough. They are set to return to their parent clubs or released.

This season, only John McGinn, Emi Buendia and Morgan Rogers have performed consistently well. Thus, one or two additional pacey wingers are needed to compete at the highest level.

The other positions that require greater depth are the full-back roles. Emery has relied heavily on Matty Cash and Lucas Digne, both of whom are now in their 30s and require stronger competition than Ian Maatsen and Lamare Bogarde, who have struggled for consistency.

Meanwhile, the goalkeeping position could also become a priority if Emiliano Martinez leaves. So far, the Argentine shot-stopper remains part of Emery’s plans. The 33-year-old is not interested in a move to the Middle East, meaning Villa would only consider a sale if a suitable offer arrives.

The Expected Sales

Alongside new arrivals, The Lions are expected to sanction several departures to comply with financial regulations and create room for further business. A number of players are likely to be placed on the transfer list due to interest from other clubs or because they are considered surplus to requirements.

The most sought-after player in Villa’s squad this summer is undoubtedly Morgan Rogers. Several clubs, including PSG and Arsenal, have emerged as potential suitors. Emery would prefer to keep him, but if there is any club willing to meet the asking price, the club may consider selling the former Middlesbrough man.

Another player who could depart is Lamare Bogarde. Several Premier League clubs have shown interest in the youngster, and Villa may be tempted to cash in should a suitable offer arrive.

Meanwhile, players such as Andres Garcia, Leon Bailey and Kosta Nedeljkovic are also likely to head for the exit. The same applies to Tommy O’Reilly and Sil Swinkels. However, Aston Villa remain undecided over Samuel Illing-Junior. He could be sent out on loan again, sold permanently or integrated into the first-team squad.

Last but not least, summer signing Evan Guessand, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Crystal Palace, faces an uncertain future at Villa Park. The Eagles did not activate their option to buy before it expired on May 31 following the resignation of manager Oliver Glasner. The Ivorian international could still make a permanent move to Selhurst Park, depending on the identity of Palace’s next head coach.
