The 2026 NBA Finals are officially underway, with Game 1 taking place at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.
Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks are playing host to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs in what promises to be a compelling championship series.
Both franchises have endured long waits to reach this stage, with the Knicks facing a 27-year drought and the Spurs a 12-year absence from the Finals.
New York arrives at the Finals in blistering form, riding an 11-game winning streak that included back-to-back sweeps of Philadelphia and Cleveland in the playoffs.
The Spurs earned their place in the Finals by eliminating the defending-champion Oklahoma City Thunder on the road in a remarkable playoff run.
The last time these two franchises met in the NBA Finals, San Antonio defeated New York in five games back in 1999.
That 1999 meeting serves as the inspiration for a quiz asking fans to name each team’s leading scorer from that lockout-shortened season.
The 1998-99 season was reduced in length due to a work stoppage, meaning players needed to have appeared in at least 30 games to qualify for the quiz.
The quiz covers all 29 NBA teams from that era, with clues provided in the form of team abbreviation, points per game, and jersey number.
So far, the quiz has been attempted 289 times, with an average score of 16.4 out of 29, representing a completion rate of 57 percent.
Among the answers included are Allen Iverson leading Philadelphia with 26.8 points per game, Shaquille O’Neal topping the Los Angeles Lakers with 26.3, and Karl Malone pacing Utah with 23.8 points per game.
Patrick Ewing led the Knicks with 17.3 points per game that season, while Tim Duncan was the Spurs’ top scorer with 21.7 points per game during that championship campaign.
