The New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs are set to tip off the 2026 NBA Finals on Wednesday with Game 1 approaching fast.
Much of the pre-Finals conversation has centred on two players who have defined their respective teams throughout the postseason.
Knicks guard Jalen Brunson has been a prominent figure in the NBA for several years now, establishing himself as one of the game’s elite players.
Victor Wembanyama, meanwhile, is in the midst of what many are describing as a genuine breakout season for the Spurs.
In Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Wembanyama delivered a commanding performance with 22 points and seven rebounds.
That effort earned him the Western Conference Finals MVP award, further cementing his status as one of basketball’s most dangerous talents.
Speaking with the press on Tuesday, Brunson was asked directly about Wembanyama and did not hold back in his assessment of the Spurs star.
Brunson said, “Watching him as a player, it’s pretty unbelievable.”
He continued by elaborating on what makes the Spurs forward so difficult to prepare for as an opponent heading into the series.
“Things he’s able to do both sides of the ball, obviously people have never really seen before, for a person of his size, so it’s incredible to watch from a fan’s perspective,” Brunson added.
Brunson then acknowledged the challenge Wembanyama presents not just as a spectacle but as a direct competitive threat throughout the Finals.
“As an opposing player. It’s something you constantly have to be on watch for,” he said, underlining the unique defensive problem Wembanyama poses.
Brunson also stressed the importance of preparation and discipline when facing a player of Wembanyama’s extraordinary capabilities on the court.
“You just never know the things that he’s capable of doing, and so that’s why game planning and our game-plan discipline and our attention to details are so important when it comes to playing him, because he’s pretty incredible,” Brunson said.
With both superstars performing at an exceptionally high level entering the Finals, this series has the makings of a genuinely compelling championship showdown.
