The Orlando Magic are closing in on a deal to hire Sean Sweeney as their next head coach, according to sources.

ESPN’s Shams Charania was first to report that the two sides are finalising an agreement that will bring Sweeney into the top job.

Sweeney currently serves as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, where he has built a strong reputation around the league.

Earlier in the day, Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line had reported that Orlando was “very interested” in securing Sweeney’s services.

The reporting from Fischer and Stein indicated that the Magic had identified Sweeney as a primary target in their head coaching search.

Sweeney attracted attention from multiple teams during the coaching search process, underlining the high regard in which he is held across the NBA.

Despite interest from other franchises, it is Orlando that has moved quickest and most decisively to land their preferred candidate.

The Magic’s pursuit of Sweeney signals a clear intent to bring in a coach with strong defensive and strategic credentials developed at the Spurs.

San Antonio’s coaching staff has long been regarded as one of the most respected development environments in professional basketball.
